Ely City Hockey Club Match Reports

ELY City, still unbeaten and still top of the league after the first six games of the season, entertained March II on Saturday.

The game started with the two teams looking evenly matched. Ely may have been guilty of expecting a somewhat easier ride, having convincingly beaten March I earlier in the season. Ely’s play was frustrating to watch, as they looked for the killer pass and consistently gave the ball away up front.

After about 20 minutes Tommy Hugo was picked out by Chris Purlant, who directed his pass to the striker to slot home without hesitation.

Having rediscovered the simple passing game, Ely started to make things look much easier. Stuart Clarke fired the ball into the March goal to make it 2-0 to Ely, followed very soon after the restart by skipper Chris Vincett to make it 3-0.

Badger Rutledge scored what must have been a contender for the goal of the season to make it 4-0 with a trick shot from a short corner. Tommy Hugo added his second goal and Ely’s fifth of the day to make it 5-0 to Ely at half time.

The second half started much the same as the first half had ended with Purlant adding to the score sheet with a powerful strike from the top of the D.

March rallied in the latter part of the second half and Ely came under pressure in their half of the pitch as they have so often in the second half this season. March gained a consolation goal that was well deserved as Ely became complacent.

The game ended at 6-1 to Ely, keeping them top of the table for another week.

After last week’s slip date, Ely Ladies 1st XI were hungry to get back to competitive hockey and hosted St. Ives 2nd XI at the EOSA astro.  Captain Hannah Scotney delivered a rousing pre-match talk and emphasised the need not to concede an early goal as has been the case in recent weeks.  Determined to prove themselves against a good team and execute a performance to please their captain, Ely started well. Ely secured early possession through the midfield however St Ives were equally determined to perform and won an early penalty corner which they were unlucky not to convert.  Unfortunately, Ely were soon forced to reshuffle the team as Fiona Bartley picked up a calf injury. Chanre Bond returned to the squad after a 3 week absence and Pamela Clarke once again showed her versatility moving to sweeper, her fourth position in as many weeks.

With the midfield and defence combining to switch the ball across the pitch, Ely increased the pressure and generated a number of attacking opportunities. Cathy Gilmour and Holly Radcliffe added depth to the attack, pushing forward up either flank from defence. With a move straight from the training ground, Ely scored their first goal as Cathy Gilmour switched the ball across pitch from a sideline hit through Anne-Marie Lye and into Gemma Voutt, whose strikers instinct saw her pounce on the rebound to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

Ely’s determination continued but the absence of Krista Hopkinson in central midfield was noticeable and the visitors were able to penetrate Ely’s defence and win a number of penalty corners. Nevertheless, Ely withstood the pressure with captain Scotney leading by example to take out St. Ives’ first strike at goal on several occasions.

The second half saw Ely extend their lead through a Chanre Bond goal but then succumb to their demons of old as St. Ives pulled one back almost immediately. This unsettled the home side and Ely lost direction in their play. Their tendency to occasionally panic in defence was evident and the visitors temporarily took control. Captain Scotney and manager Jo Rayner rallied the team though and Ali Chapman soon secured Ely’s third goal and the victory with a cheeky sweep shot on goal. After the match captain Scotney said “I’m really pleased with the team’s performance who played well under pressure. Well done and thank you to Pamela Clarke for her excellent performance, a well deserved player of the match.†Ely have another slip date next weekend but will be raring to play again on the 22nd November and maintain their position at the top of the league.

Ely City Lay Down Another Marker

Ely City gave further notice of their growing maturity with another gutsy win against a skilful but ill-disciplined Rutland side in gloomy and slippery conditions at Stamford on Saturday.

Already without last year’s player of the season, Fez Abbas, who remains on indefinite gardening leave, and experienced ‘keeper Tony Tooth, Ely suffered another late setback when in-form left-back Charlie Kisby (“an important player who would have been right in his element up against a young Rutland side,†observed skipper Chris Vincett) was also forced to withdraw from the squad.  Rich Kay returned to strengthen a creaking Ely defence, and Vincett handed a debut to promising young ‘keeper Rory Gilmour and a first start at left-back to Dan treat-the-ball-with-the-respect-it-deserves Jolly.

Desperate to put right last year’s disappointing defeat on this ground, Ely produced a devastating first-half display of slick passing and pace and movement to lead 3-1 at the break.  Rutland were unable to cope with the tireless running of Stu Clarke and Grant Gilmour; Julian ten-tonne-an-acre Palmer bossed the middle of the park; and Tommy Hugo and Chris Purlant turned providers as skipper Vincett, inspired by the travelling support, netted a Hugo-esque first-half hatrick, rounding off three breath-taking team moves with composed finishes of the highest class.  “It was like watching Brazil at times,†observed Purlant Snr, though that may have been a reference to the fact that both teams kicked the ball a bit on occasion.  Rutland mustered a scrappy goal in reply, but their only real response was for their discipline to unravel losing a player in each half to yellow cards for crude challenges on the impeccable Rich Vincett.

Rutland regrouped at half-time and dominated possession as Ely looked to play on the break, but were unable to break down a resolute Ely rear-guard, steadied by an assured debut from Rory Gilmour and led by the outstanding Rich Vincett.

The defeated Rutland skipper commented ruefully “You can see why they’ve been winning all their games.â€Â  Ely skipper and hatrick-hero Vincett preferred to deflect attention from his own efforts:  “It was our most important result of the season so far.  When Granty Gilmour gets his skates on like that, no-one can stick with him.  I’m just pleased the side remained solid and determined and were able to ride on the back of three goals of individual brilliance.â€

Ely city entertained Cambridge south this weekend at the hallowed “Fortress Elyâ€, knowing that this would be one of their tougher games this year.

Ely started strongly against a fit looking Cambs South side and quickly set the tone of the game with a goal from on-form striker Tommy Hugo.  Ely settled and began to control the pace of the game & soon notched up a second with a lighting cross from Stuart Clarke pinged home by Hugo.

A third goal came just before the half time break as Chris Purlant ‘faked’ a drag flick from a short corner and then capitalised on the keeper’s premature reaction, firing the ball past him with a resounding thud on the backboard.

The second half was all about maintaining their lead, with Ely determined not to concede.  In recent weeks it has been all about the offensive moves, but this week Ely’s defenders really showed their worth, fending off numerous counter attacks from the Cambridge side and remaining solid in the face of several short corners.

Dan Jolly made an impressive debut at centre back, while the ever reliable Rich Vincett at Sweeper was on top form and didn’t miss a tackle.  On the flanks at the back, Kisby and Gilmour were solid in their tackling and lighting quick moving forward, allowing the Ely team to play the ball wide and bypass the Cambridge side’s midfield.

Ely’s midfield put in another exhausting performance, with Julian Palmer, Chris Purlant and Stuart Clarke covering every inch of the pitch.  Their off-the ball running meant that at times Cambs were completely overrun in the middle of the park with green and yellow shirts dominating the play.

The game ended at 3-0 to Ely, confirming if it were needed, that Ely are the side to beat this season, and surely looking good for a finish at the top end of the table.  They travel away to Rutland next week.

Ely were expecting a hard game vs Long Sutton, although they were only sitting half way in the league, not only did they not score many goals, they didn’t concede many goals either.
The game started as expected, Ely dominating the 1st exchanges, but not delivering their normal cutting edge.
Ely tried to get their passing game going down the right, Luke Massey onto Warren Dennis, who made a blistering run down the wing and along the base line, before cutting the ball back to Roberts who fired the ball past the diving goal keeper. 1 – 0.
Mark Upton, Alex Spence & Robert Radcliffe were all solid in midfield, winning the ball off Long Sutton players on numerous occasions, but not really making the best of their opportunities.
Ely, were winning many short corners, but although the pull outs from Spence were great, Roberts couldn’t make the most of their usual excellent routines & the GK making some fantastic saves.
Ely went into the half time break 1 – 0 up but really not feeling too comfortable with only the 1 goal for their efforts. A stern talk about ball retention & work rate rallied the troups.
Although Long Sutton were resilient in defence their attack had let them down in the 1st half with Tony Tooth only having to make 1 save & that we all thought was to make himself feel better as we were all sure the ball was going wide!
The second half started & the ball was played around in fine style, Daish to McCall, out to Ben Smith who slotted a pin point pass to Radcliffe. Beating his opponent with ease, the Ely youngster (playing the centre midfield attacking role for the 1st time) deftly moved the ball out to Warby, who with the precision of a seamstress, picked out Upton who finished the move with the coolness of a seasoned professional. 2 – 0.
This put a more confident Ely team in boisterous mood. Some flowing hockey ensued until finally Roberts slotted his 2nd goal from a short corner. 3 – 0.
Mention must go the resolute defence, with Brian Daish guiding his defensive troops of Massey, Smith & McCall to another clean sheet. 4 games with only 1 goal against says it all!
Warren Dennis continued to cause problems for Long Sutton down the right, as they struggled to cope with pace. The movement between him & Luke Massey was superb. At the final whistle, an Ely side were pleased with the 3 points, disappointed in not scoring more from their opportunities but as they said at the start, Long Sutton don’t score many but don’t concede many and the game lived up to that.
This result now puts Ely 3rd XI in 2nd place in the league on goal difference, but with a game in hand over Wisbech 4th team, who they have already beaten 3 – 1 in the opening game of the season.
