James Bond Star Daniel Craig Has Bacon Flown To Italy

Filed under: food & drink, not green — parrish @ 10:30 am

It’s one thing to like bacon, but it’s quite another to LIKE bacon. Case in point, a one Mr. Daniel Craig (aka James Bond) requested that British bacon be flown to him in Italy while shooting Quantum of Solace.

Besides contributing to the reckless slaughter of animals, Craig is totally pissing off mother earth. Seriously? Flying in bacon from England?

After hearing the news, the UK chapter of PETA decided to send the 007 star a treat of their own – veggie bacon! On their website, PETA says: “To be a hero on and off screen, we think Mr Bond should save animals’ lives and give the veggie variety of bacon a go! What’s more, he might not be aware that eating meat can make you sluggish in the bedroom: because meat can contribute to clogsing the arteries to all of a person’s organs, it can lead to a higher risk of heart disease, strokes and even impotence – a problem unlikely to affect the fictional James Bond.”

While we definitely would rather see Craig eating the fake stuff, flying in products from Britain to Italy seems mighty wasteful. What do you think Ecorazzi readers? Is it worth the CO2 emissions to prove a point? Chime in and share your thoughts!

Celebrity Chef Paula Deen Delivers 25,000 Pounds Of Meat To Food Bank

Filed under: food & drink, green and famous, not green — parrish @ 11:33 am

Paula Deen — the Food Network star who serves up dinner with a side of angioplasty — recently traveled to Washington D.C. to team up with Smithfield Foods and donate 25,000 pounds of ham to the Capital Area Food Bank.

If you’re not familiar with Smithfield Foods, they are the largest pork manufacturer in the world and kill almost 30 million pigs each year. According to PETA, “Smithfield plays with pigs’ genetics and pumps the animals so full of drugs that most of Smithfield’s pigs are very sick, many can barely walk, and about one in five die before they can be sent to slaughter.”

About the donation, Paula said: “Listen to this. Do you know how long that 25,000 pounds of food is going to last? You know hunger is a constant thing.”

But here’s the thing: what Deen doesn’t realize is that supporting companies like Smithfield is actually counter-productive to ending world hunger.  It’s been estimated that if Americans reduce the amount of meat consumption by just 10%, it would free up enough land to grow 12 million tons of grain -enough to save the millions of children and adults starving to death on our planet each year.

So while we appreciate the fact that Paula wanted to help feed the hungry, sometimes it’s more than the thought that counts — especially when the thought involves 25,000 pounds of environmentally-destructive food.

The Green Quote: Samantha Ronson Speaks Out On Lohan, Fur And Flour

Filed under: fashion, not green, web — parrish @ 10:42 am

“PETA should focus their efforts on educating people on what they believe are injustices instead of seeking press via harassing those in the limelight. I received an apology too many days late from the PETA folks (the blog removal was too little too late) and today I’m pissed at the bag of flour thrown on Lindsay last night. Not because I got powdered down, but because the girl who threw it acted like an animal herself. I take that back, it’s an insult to animals to group her in with them, my dog is FAR more civilized than that person. I would have more respect for them if they didn’t use other people to get their point across. Lindsay, Mary Kate, Ashley Olsen, Anna Wintour and the rest of the targeted celebrities aren’t the problem, I’m pretty sure they’re not the only ones wearing fur, in fact, they should be appreciated by PETA for giving them a target. If it weren’t for them, who would get them press?????

I know I’m probably going to get a lot of angry emails in response, but I don’t really care. I got enough last week for no reason so I’m more than happy to ignore the nastiness after seeing what I saw last night. I’m not about to throw on a fur coat in retaliation, but had I had one within reach, I’m not sure I would have walked away from it.

p.s. when was the last time you saw an animal attack one of its own in defense of a human? hmmmmm….. that’s one to grow on!

p.s.s. i think there are plenty of families that could have used that flour for a meal. nice job, lady.”

- Samantha Ronson discussing the whole Lindsay Lohan flour incident on her blog. What do YOU think about what Ronson’s thoughts?

Update: Maggie Gyllenhaal WAS Wearing Real Fur. Did Louis Vuitton Change Site?

Filed under: fashion, not green — parrish @ 12:19 pm

In the year that I have worked for Ecorazzi the Maggie Gyllenhaal fur controversy has absolutely been the most intense, ever-changing, phone calls in the middle of the night kinda story.

Here’s how it went: I see this picture of Maggie wearing what looks to me like real fur so I post and ask for your help identifying it. We get tons of comments/emails from people weighing in on the matter — including people from the HSUS who say with 90 percent accuracy that it IS real fur. Ecorazzi’s own contributer, Steph, finds out where it’s from –Louis Vuitton — and we announce in an update that it IS real fur. Tired yet? Keep reading.

Then, one of our commenters goes on to the Louis site and reads the official description which says, “FAUX-FUR.” I go online, find the exact page she was looking at and confirm that it indeed says “FAUX-FUR.” So I call Chloe Jo over at GirlieGirlArmy (who’s skeptical) and Ecorazzi posts an update saying that Maggie was indeed wearing FAUX.  PETA ends up covering it on their blog and everyone is happy with Maggie for not wearing the real stuff.

AND THEN THIS MORNING HAPPENS!

We get an email from a reader saying, “You guys must be blind, it says FOX fur, not FAUX fur.” I go back to the site where I read faux-fur and now it says FOX fur. Now I can’t really make any accusations here, but I’m going to say with 99.8 percent accuracy that when me and our readers checked the Vuitton site last week it most definitely said FAUX-FUR, not FOX-FUR. I’d bet my year’s salary on it! SO WTF? Was their a typo on the Louis last week? I guess we’ll never know.

For now it’s safe to say that it IS REAL FOX FUR, which means we’re all a little pissed and somebody has some serious explaining to do. So write it up, mark it down and charge the crime — Maggie Gyllenhaal WAS WEARING REAL FUR!!!!!

Was Maggie Gyllenhaal Wearing Fur At MoMa Film Benefit?

Filed under: fashion, not green — parrish @ 12:40 pm

MAGGIE!!!! SAY IT AINT SOOOOOOO!!! Last night in NYC Maggie Gyllenhaal was photographed in what looks to be an entire forest of animals at the MoMa Film Benefit Gala Honoring Baz Luhrmann.

Now I don’t want to be quick to judge here — I mean Maggie did host the eco-friendly catwalk during LA Fashion Week – but that outfit looks pretty real to me. But it can’t be, right? I mean this is the same woman who fought poverty with a designer necklace and even kicked off the Climate Matters video contest. Should, could, would the Magster actually wear real-fur?

We need your help fur-experts! Examine the picture and take your best guest if this furry fashion choice is real or fake! My fingers are crossed that it’s fake, fake, fake! Chime in and give us your expert opinion!

more photos at: imnotobsessed.com

[Update: Ecorazzi's own contributing editor, Stephanie, identified this very real Louis Vuitton design. No word yet from Gyllenhaal's people, but we're pretty convinced it's the real thing. Seriously, Maggie? Seriously?  See the proof here: http://www.ilvoelv.com/2008/07/louis-vuitton-fall-winter-2008-ad.html]

[Update 2: WE GOT IT WRONG!!! Yes folks -- it does happen every now and then. It's just been confirmed by the Louis Vuitton website that indeed this jacket is FAUX-FUR!!! I repeat: Maggie was NOT wearing fur. We send our apologies to the cruelty-free actress and thank her for not supporting the fur-industry. We owe you one, Mags!]

Sienna Miller Gets Covered In Cow’s Blood For The Hours’ New Music Video

Filed under: music, not green, television — parrish @ 12:30 pm

And you thought America’s Next Top Model was bad? In a new music for British indie rock band The Hours’, Sienna Miller makes an†interesting†costume choice…covering herself in cow’s blood.

At the start of the video Sienna appears wearing a hospital gown and totally freaking out as she tries to escape from a clothing store. Later, Miller walks into a room filled with dripping cow carcasses and proceeds to rub the blood all over her body, before blurting out the line: “Death feels like the safest place for me right now.” She later tries to cram herself into a glass cabinet and struggles through piles of high heel shoes.

The band’s frontman Ant Genn said: “It’s a song about struggle and addiction and fear and darkness… And the video brings it to life. The song and the film work perfectly together.” Umm…ummm…ummm…gross?

Artsy or not, that video sounds absolutely revolting. What do you think, readers? Does the sound of this video make you want to barf, or it’s all in the spirit of art? Chime in and share your thoughts!

Eddie Murphy Labeled A ‘Wasteful, Arrogant Celebrity’

Filed under: not green — michael @ 2:07 pm

A Hollywood Teamsters rep has slammed Eddie Murphy as “the most demanding and arrogant” celebrity according to Janet Charlton’s Hollywood blog.

Stories of the star’s wasteful habits and demands poured forth after Charlton chatted up some of the Teamsters. Here’s what she said regarding their comments,

“Eddie doesn’t believe in recycling. Every morning when he’s shooting a movie he demands a new set of special underwear and socks with the TAGS still attached. He puts it on, and at the end of the day THROWS IT AWAY. (Nothing is washed and re-used.) His motor home is stocked with toiletries like mouthwash and toothpaste and beverages, etc. EVERYTHING that has been opened is THROWN AWAY at the end of the day. He won’t use an opened bottle of mouthwash!”

Wait — so is this who Chris Brown got the idea from to wear underwear only once?

Mary-Kate Olsen, Others: “Don’t Use My Name!”

Filed under: donations, not green — sara @ 10:57 am

You know something has to be wrong with you when a handful of celebs don’t want publicity associated with your name. That’s the case with Lev Leviev, the Israeli billionaire denounced by Oxfam America in January for his unethical diamond mining practices and settlement construction. Famous Hollywood photographer Timothy White gives thanks to Leviev in his new book, Hollywood Pinups, released today; Leviev’s diamonds are being featured in the book. In an ironic twist, the book names Oxfam America as one of the recipients of its proceeds–and Oxfam isn’t happy.

Neither are the celebs featured in the book. The PR company that represents Tea Leoni, Kate Walsh, Felicity Huffman, Mary-Kate Olsen, and Melissa George has asked for their names to not be associated with the Leviev, and Oxfam Ambassador Kristin Davis has had her photo removed from Leviev’s website. New York rights coalition Adalah-NY has contacted others and asked them to renounce the company as well, including Susan Sarandon (who wrote the book’s introduction), Vanessa Williams, Kate Hudson, Molly Sims, and Gina Gershon.

An Oxfam America spokesperson, Adrienne Smith, said, “Oxfam reiterates our policy that we are not and never will be partners or beneficiaries of Leviev because of both his mining practices and his support of Israeli settlements on Occupied Palestinian Lands which is in contravention of International Law and a major obstacle in the road to peace… Oxfam is disturbed to find ourselves used in this way and we intend to be proactive in informing those in our community about the deliberate strategy of Leviev Diamonds to connect itself with unwitting charities and celebrities.â€

What do you think? Did Leviev redeem himself at all by trying to work with Oxfam? Or is everyone right to continue denouncing this corruption?

Mischa Barton And Others Support Burberry’s Cruel Fashion Sense

Filed under: fashion, not green — parrish @ 11:45 am

As much as we love writing about all the awesome things celebs do for the world, sometimes we must bring you less than groovy news…and I’m afraid that now is one of those times!

This week a bevy of famous faces came out to support the re-opening of Burberry’s store in Beverly Hills. Not to be a Debby Downer, but Burberry is one of the least eco-aware fashion lines out there, and still stubbornly insist on using fur – a material that most A-list designers have agreed to stop selling.

And yet still, stars like Mishca Barton, Kate Hudson, Liv Tyler, Kate Beckinsale, Maria Bello, Molly Sims and Mena Suvari showed their support for Burberry and helped contribute to the cruel company’s 13 percent rise in first half revenue. What I’m most surprised at, is that Proposition 2 supporter and one of our favorite green gals, Amy Smart, also attended — even after she publicly declared her commitment to living a fur free life! Ames, you’re breaking my heart here!

I know it’s not always easy to avoid suffering in this world, but to stop wearing fur is an easy decision that we all can make, and I certainly hope these public figures will reconsider what companies they support in the future.
