Cusack And Harrelson’s 2012 Flick Gets A Trailer

The apocalyptic movie 2012 — starring John Cusack and Woody Harrelson — has just received its first trailer. Based on this early impression, it looks a little bit like eco-disaster flick The Day After Tomorrow; which I guess makes sense since Roland Emmerich is the director behind both films.

“I play a guy who’s been talking for a long time, the whole world thinks he’s crazy,†Harrelson said earlier this year of his character. “But he’s been talking that there’s gonna be hell to pay for what’s been going on ecologically and everything.â€

Other actors due to star in 2012 include Thandie Newton, Danny Glover, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt, and Chin Han. Check it out below:

Razzi Snap: KT Tunstall Joins Campaign To Fight Homelessness

Filed under: film-tv, food & drink, green and famous, movies, music — michael @ 3:47 pm

Singer KT Tunstall has joined a Scottish campaign to eradicate homelessness by 2012. Launched by charity Shelter Scotland, the initiative is asking people to name which song reminds them of home. KT chose “Getting Some Fun Out of Life” by Billie Holiday. The top two choices so far are Dougie MacLean’s Caledonia and 500 miles by The Proclaimers. Anyone else find that Proclaimers song now reminding them of The Office? [Read more...]

Organizers for the Jane Goodall Institue Awards ceremony last week probably should have paid closer attention to the type of vehicle actor Pierce Brosnan arrived in. After all, the former James Bond was being honored that night for his commitment to environmental education — so why have him arrive in a Lincoln Town Car Limo? For his part, Brosnan says he drives a hydrogen-powered BMW H7 at home — but couldn’t anyone have borrowed a Prius or something for the event? [Read more...]

The new green-themed Bond flick, Quantum of Solace raked in an impressive $27 million on its opening day on Friday. For comparison, 2006’s Casino Royale only managed $14 million. Eco-villains are truly in vogue. [Read more...]

Reviews so far have been fairly positive — with a 71% fresh rating over on Rotten Tomatoes. Still — our interest lies in the fact that Bond’s villain this time is a greenwashing badass named Dominic Greene. Can 007 save the day and the planet? Will Al Gore step in and help kick some ass? Wall-E Green DVD Packaging Only A Limited Release

Because the Earth is only worth it for the first 100,000 copies.

Pixar’s Wall-E was by all reports a box-office success — raking in close to $500 million worldwide. It was an odd project of sorts for the famous studio because even though they never set out to create a film with an environmental message, Wall-E nevertheless heavily leaned on themes of environmental stewardship, overconsumption, and waste. Unlike previous animated films with all of the expected general marketing tie-ins, Pixar came under fire when Wall-E’s goods were less than in harmony with the eco-theme. In fact, as one writer pointed, the best a PR Rep could point out in terms of green was a post-consumer Wall-E branded Kleenex box. Funny enough, Kleenex was then slammed by Greenpeace with a Wall-E spoof over their rainforest clearing.

So it was with some hope that the DVD packaging for Wall-E might embrace some green packaging. After all, for a film that chastises society on waste, it would kind of make sense. Thankfully, that call has been answered — at least for the first 100,000 customers. In an odd decision, only that number will receive an eco-friendly package that contains no plastic; it’s made from 100 percent recyclable cardboard. The Blu-Ray version doesn’t incorporate the cardboard (why?), but is made from 30 percent smaller than the standard DVD package.

Is the price of going eco the reason why Wall-E’s green cred ends after 100,000 copies? Sure, it’s better than nothing at all — but with millions of copies probably to be sold, it would have been cool to see them just go for it with green packaging all the way. In the end, eventually downloading the flick from iTunes may just be the best thing you can do for the environment. That’ll be one less DVD case some robot has to pick up in the future.

Check out the rest of the details here.

Nigel Barker Holding NYC Benefit Screening Of ‘A Sealed Fate’ For HSUS

Filed under: animals, campaigns, events, events: nyc, film-tv, movies — parrish @ 3:50 pm

Just a few days ago Ecorazzi told you that Nigel Barker was working to end the brutal slaughtering of seals in Canada with the Humane Society of the United States and slowly becoming America’s Next Top Activist (which actually sounds like a really good show…have your people call my people).

If that story caught your interest, you might be elated to hear that Nigel will be holding a benefit screening of his documentary film A Sealed Fate in support of The Humane Society of the United States on the Upper East Side at the AMC Loews Theater (3rd Ave btwn E.71st and 72nd) on Tuesday, November 18th, 2008.

Not only will you get to watch what I’m sure will be a touching film, but Nigel will lead a post-performance discussion and Q&A session with campaigners from The Humane Society of the United States Fur-Free Campaign and Humane Society International Protect Seals Campaign to discuss ways that we can help end Canada’s cruel seal hunt.

You really have no excuse not to be there since tickets are JUST $25 EACH! Seating will begin at 6pm for a 7pm go, and while a limited number of tickets may be available at the theater, it’s best to get your advanced online tickets.

For more info, visit the Humane Society’s website! Yo people, the seals need YOUR HELP!

Dreamworks Donates To Conservation International For Kung Fu Panda

Filed under: animals, film-tv, movies — parrish @ 12:26 pm

While I’m not generally a big fan of animation, I AM a big fan of Jack Black and so naturally I’m all about Kung Fu Panda! This week (to every 5-year-old’s enjoyment), the Dreamworks film was released on DVD and whispers are already circulating that a sequel is on its way.

To celebrate the success, Dreamworks Animation is partnering with Conservation International and giving a little something back to the pandas. The production team recently visited the Sichuan province where they spent time at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

There they had the chance to observe pandas playing in a natural habitat, made sketches and filmed the bears for later reference. Oh yeah, and they also donation $1 million to help with conservation efforts for the iconic bears. I mean, okay!

Jamie Foxx Supports World Peace And Release Of New Documentary

Filed under: events, film-tv, movies, politics — parrish @ 12:20 pm

In today’s celebrity-obsessed world, the famous folks of Hollywood have a wonderful platform to discuss important issues in our society. Earlier this fall, Jamie Foxx spoke about achieving a dream that many people share: world peace. Jamie was helping to support Love Sees No Color – a documentary by Fred Nassiri filmed through various countries to promote world peace.

Fred also created the website IWantPeace.com with the goal “to be the first online portal that brings likeminded charities and organizations together to educate, gain exposure, and allow the online community to participate and donate in their unique charity and its individual platform.â€

Foxx was asked what he would do with a billion dollars and he said, “If I had a billion dollars, I would throw a big party. …and then let people have a voice. Get a whole lot of microphones from all over the world. Imagine microphones in every part of the world, and [Africans] talk about how they felt, about waking up today and how good they feel and what they want out of life. And only good things, you know. I would do something like that.â€

If you’re excited about world peace (I mean who isn’t?), make sure you visit IWantPeace.com and put some money where your mouth is. One hundred percent of the proceeds will be donated to charity!

Edward Norton’s Obama Documentary Gets A Hollywood Ending

Filed under: film-tv, movies, politics, television — michael @ 4:13 pm

Long before President-elect Barack Obama had even made up his mind to run for the highest office in the land, Edward Norton and his Class 5 Films production company were already documenting the Senator’s life. The 39-year-old actor said that he became inspired by Obama’s 2004 speech at the National Democratic Convention and felt inspired to capture someone from his generation — and not his parent’s — inspiring so many and rising in leadership.

“At the time, he was the new senator from Illinois,” Norton told Variety earlier this year. “None of us had voted for him or contributed to his campaigns. None of us was saying, ‘I want to back this guy for president.’ It was more this generational experience, of seeing someone we felt represented us in a very unique and fresh way, and the desire to explore what would happen to the first person our age who staked a claim to national leadership.”

Since 2006 — starting with Obama’s trip to Africa — Norton and his team have had the cameras rolling every step of the way. The whole project was kept fairly secret — since neither the campaign nor Norton wanted it to fuel any criticism of Obama’s ‘celebrity’. Last month, Norton spoke briefly about the project to the Vancouver Sun saying, “We’re making a historical record, not something to play a role in the election. So we have an agreement with [the campaign] that we won’t talk about this, or publicize it until the election is over. I can’t talk about access [but] it’s a fascinating thing to document.”

What an amazing hunch to run with documenting Obama — from before he declared his candidacy to last night’s acceptance of the Presidency! Such a historical record of those behind-the-scenes events is certainly priceless.

Of course, you can bet this footage to carry some kind of price. Back in August, it was reported that HBO was highly interested in snagging the rights to the footage. Their initial plans were to air the series within the first ‘100 days of the Obama Presidency’; provided he win. Mission accomplished.

So — stay tuned. We may have witnessed history last night, but we’ll also be privy to the behind-the-scenes two years of effort and drama it took to get there. Thanks to Edward Norton for having the foresight to document the ride.

Leonardo DiCaprio to Make Another Environmental Documentary

Filed under: movies — stephanie @ 11:07 am

Leonardo DiCaprio expressed his excitement about a possible Obama presidency this week, and revealed plans to start working on a new environmental documentary. Speaking to reporters about his recently released film, Body of Lies, DiCaprio said he’s crossing his fingers for Obama and believes the rest of the world is, too.

“I’ve my fingers crossed that he will win because I think he’ll make some dramatic changes in our country that we’re looking for, but the rest of the world is as well.”

DiCaprio also spoke of the need for the next president to address environmental issues, saying “I think it’s almost impossible to not have a better environmental policy than our last president,” he said.

He’s also looking forward to bringing us a follow-up to his environmental documentary, The 11th Hour.  Ecorazzi previously reported that there was a RUMOR going around that DiCaprio would indeed make a sequel to his environmental doc, but now it looks like it’s official! Can’t wait to hear the details of what he’s going to cover this time around! The 11th Hour was pretty powerful, and we all know how dedicated DiCaprio really is to this subject – should be a good one!
