Anderson Cooper and CNN Search For Humanitarian Heroes

As much as we adore famous faces here at Ecorazzi, we also know that it doesn’t take a movie contract and an entourage to be a star! There are incredible people doing awesome deeds all around the world and Anderson Cooper and CCN will honor them this week with CNN Heroes – An All-Star Tribute.

This past February, CNN launched its search to find the most outstanding humanitarian and received 3,700 nominations from 75 countries! Since then, philanthropic leaders such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Jane Goodall, Magic Johnson, George Lopez, and Queen Rania Al Abdullah have narrowed down the search to 10 finalists.  We’d like to congratulate the following people on all their great work:

Tad Agoglia,Yohannes Gebregeorgis, Carolyn LeCroy,  Anne Mahlum, Liz McCartney, Phymean Noun, David Puckett, Maria Ruiz, Marie Da Silva and Viola Vaughn.

The final winner will be chosen by the public and voting starts tomorrow! To read more about these remarkable people and cast your vote, visit cnn.com/heroes!

Knight Rider’s KITT To Get A Green Upgrade

Knight Rider, the modern bastardization of the beloved 80’s David Hasselhoff series, is going green for NBC’s “Green Is Universal” week. We already know that the current KITT (voiced by none other than Val Kilmer) sports some solar panels and is based on the Ford Mustang. Beyond that, producers were rather vague as to any of the “fuel-efficient” qualities the next-generation vehicle could boast. This was pretty disappointing — especially when the 80’s car used liquid hydrogen in a turbine engine that got 100 MPG. Seriously. Wikipedia doesn’t lie.

It looks like Wednesday night, however, we might see a new fuel-efficient KITT hit the road. Here’s the preview from NBC:

The government dispatches a green consultant to the SSC, in order to evaluate the KITT Cave’s carbon deficiency. The consultant turns out to have had a history with Graiman. She also challenges Graiman to defend and explain KITT’s “green” status, and Graiman reveals the next generation of KITT.

Might we see another hydrogen-powered KITT? How about we drop the Mustang and go with an all-electric Fisker Karma?

Cusack And Harrelson’s 2012 Flick Gets A Trailer

The apocalyptic movie 2012 — starring John Cusack and Woody Harrelson — has just received its first trailer. Based on this early impression, it looks a little bit like eco-disaster flick The Day After Tomorrow; which I guess makes sense since Roland Emmerich is the director behind both films.

“I play a guy who’s been talking for a long time, the whole world thinks he’s crazy,†Harrelson said earlier this year of his character. “But he’s been talking that there’s gonna be hell to pay for what’s been going on ecologically and everything.â€

Other actors due to star in 2012 include Thandie Newton, Danny Glover, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt, and Chin Han. Check it out below:

Sunday Night Football Drops The Candles For 2nd Annual NBC Green Week

Remember the hilarity and poor judgment last year of Sunday Night Football’s decision to roll out NBC’s first Green Is Universal week with a candle-lit halftime show? Yea, so do NBC executives. In chatting with one shortly after green week concluded last year, one of them quipped, “Oh that? We got absolutely creamed for that.†What he was lamenting was SNF’s decision to dim the studio lights, fire up some candles, and have Bob Costas and Co. sit in the dark talking about energy conservation — all the while advertising monitors and other bright marketing banners continued on. “It wasn’t what we intended — but it came across as greenwashing. It’s something we’ll avoid in the future,†he said.

Thankfully, after watching halftime this evening, I’m happy to see that NBC seems to have approached the topic of climate change and energy conservation with a little more practicality. This time, hosts Bob Costas, Cris Collinsworth and Peter King simply talked about their personal greening routines. Much more palatable — even if most of the SNF audience tuned out.

Anyways, with SNF kicking things off, NBC will now aire more than 150 plus hours of environmentally themed programming across the company’s television and digital platforms. Look for that peacock to once more go green — though I’m sad to see The Office not making a go of it this time around. Oh well, I guess we’ll have some tips on recycling paper next year. Check out the full programming schedule here.

The Green Quote: Lizzy Caplan On Her Dark Vegan Character From True Blood

“I normally play a lot of characters that could be considered dark. This is a total departure from that. She’s still really twisted and screwed up, but she’s actually sort of a hippie. She loves nature and thinks everything is connected and that there is so much beauty in the world. But she’s actually kind of tweaked in the head.â€

–Actress Lizzy Caplan in a recent interview with The Trades. On True Blood she plays a vegan character named Amy who is addicted to “V” or vampire blood.

Razzi Snap: KT Tunstall Joins Campaign To Fight Homelessness

Filed under: film-tv, food & drink, green and famous, movies, music — michael @ 3:47 pm

Singer KT Tunstall has joined a Scottish campaign to eradicate homelessness by 2012. Launched by charity Shelter Scotland, the initiative is asking people to name which song reminds them of home. KT chose “Getting Some Fun Out of Life” by Billie Holiday. The top two choices so far are Dougie MacLean’s Caledonia and 500 miles by The Proclaimers. Anyone else find that Proclaimers song now reminding them of The Office? [Read more...]

Organizers for the Jane Goodall Institue Awards ceremony last week probably should have paid closer attention to the type of vehicle actor Pierce Brosnan arrived in. After all, the former James Bond was being honored that night for his commitment to environmental education — so why have him arrive in a Lincoln Town Car Limo? For his part, Brosnan says he drives a hydrogen-powered BMW H7 at home — but couldn’t anyone have borrowed a Prius or something for the event? [Read more...]

In a recent interview, Ellen Degeneres what her favorite part of Las Vegas is. Her response? “Well, the buffet…I’m vegan so I’ll just have salad,” she joked. “But still, it’s still a bargain.” [Read more...]

The new green-themed Bond flick, Quantum of Solace raked in an impressive $27 million on its opening day on Friday. For comparison, 2006’s Casino Royale only managed $14 million. Eco-villains are truly in vogue. [Read more...]

The Ladies Of The View Give Out Potentially Vegan Fashion

Filed under: fashion, film-tv, television — parrish @ 12:13 pm

What a shady headline, right? Sorry, guys…I didn’t know how else to write it! On Wednesday, the ladies of the The View  — also known as Barbara Walters, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselback, Whoopi Goldberg, and Sherri Shepherd — gave their audience members a super special gift! Each person in the crowd got a $150 gift card to ebags.com to pick out a Big Buddha Handbag.

Why is Big Buddha so great? Well some of them (I repeat, SOME), like the Bonnie Bag, are totally vegan — made with synthetic PVC for that leather-look without the leather-cruelty. But wait, synthetic PVC? Is that anywhere near environmentally-friendly? Great, now I’m conflicted!

What do YOU do when you want stylish fashion that’s leather-free and also good for the planet? Do you have a favorite eco-designer that’s veggie too?  Chime in and tell us what all you eco-loving, veg-eating environmentalists do for fashion!

James Bond’s Eco Villain Hits US Screens Today!

If you’re in the mood for a little action flick tonight, we’re going to go ahead and recommend the new James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace. Reviews so far have been fairly positive — with a 71% fresh rating over on Rotten Tomatoes. Still — our interest lies in the fact that Bond’s villain this time is a greenwashing badass named Dominic Greene. Can 007 save the day and the planet? Will Al Gore step in and help kick some ass? Check out the most recent trailer below — and if you’ve seen the film, chime in below!
