Shannon Elizabeth Is An Animal Avenger
Filed under: animals — parrish @ 11:21 am
Everyone loves a superhero, right? Well Shannon Elizabeth, best known for her role as Nadia, a sexy foreign-exchange student in the film American Pie, has shown her superhero powers by starting a non-profit animal rescue organization, called Animal Avengers.
The Animal Avengers rescue homeless animals, pay for veterinary care, plus find foster and adoptive homes for animals. Because they are a no-kill organization, AA is dedicated to finding a home for every single animal they rescue. WOW!Â
To help fund the organization, Shannon sells autographed photos and official Animal Avengers gear. She even raised $50,000 for the group by participating in a celebrity poker match.Â
If you’d like to get some fancy-pants Avenger gear and help support a great group, visit AnimalAvengers.com and get ready to put on your best superhero face.Â

Lindsay Lohan Gets A Face Full Of Flour From Anti-Fur Activist
Filed under: animals — michael @ 10:55 am
Earlier this morning, Lindsay Lohan — while on her way to a VIP lounge at a nightclub in Paris — was confronted by an anti-fur activist who dumped an entire bag of flour over her head. The French woman then shouted, “Lindsay Lohan — fur hag!”, and apparently fled the scene.
Not soon after, PETA Europe’s Robbie LeBlanc released a statement regarding the incident — which makes me believe the animal rights organization may have been behind the stunt. He said, “There is nothing remotely ‘fashionable’ about the torture and death of animals killed for fur. Lindsay Lohan might be able to ignore images of bloody animals skinned alive for their pelts, but we hope a dash of flour will help her rise to the occasion and forsake fur once and for all.”
PETA has long criticized Lohan for her use of fur — naming the actress to their “Worst Dressed List” and repeatedly urging her to drop the skins. Wearing two different fur coats over the last few days probably hasn’t helped either.
I’m not the biggest fan of direct assaults on people — even if it is with flour — but I’ve got very little sympathy for Lohan and her fur habit as well. What do you think of this latest incident? Too far or just cause?
[UPDATE: X17 scored some photos of the blow-by-blow. Guess the activist didn't get away after all...]

Natalie Imbruglia Is Fur-Free In New Ad For PETA!
Filed under: animals, campaigns, fashion — parrish @ 12:52 pm
True story: first date, super-cute girl, delicious Mexican food and/or margaritas, decent conversation. Walking back to the subway we pass a woman in an atrocious fur coat. I roll my eyes and make some comment to said first date about how disgusting that is. She says — and I quote here — “Really, I think fur is really sexy. I have two fur coats at home.†Needless to say there was no second date!
Obviously that first date was NOT with Natalie Imbruglia or that convo would have never happened. Like so many other stars, Natalie is proving that she gives a damn by posing for PETA’s new fur-free ad.
Nat says: “There is no kind way to rip the skin off animals’ backs. In the wild, animals are caught in snares and steel-jaw traps that slam down on their limbs—they often cut down to the bone and mutilate animals’ legs and paws. Anyone who wears any fur shares the blame for the torture and gruesome deaths of millions of animals each year.” Go Natalie!
While I don’t agree with spray-painting or screaming at fur-wearing so-and-so’s (I’m a peaceful activist, yo), I do show my support for the fur-free lifestyle by sporting the HSUS’s NO FUR pin all winter long. In fact, I always carry three or four extras in my pocket so that when somebody compliments me on my swag (which they do like once a week) I can share my pride!
So a big shimmy and shake to Natalie Imbruglia for leading by example and proving that cruelty is never, ever fashionable!

Emily Deschanel Helps Farm Sanctuary Celebrate Thanksgiving FOR The Turkeys
Filed under: animals, events, events: la, events: nyc, food & drink — parrish @ 1:40 pm
You know sometimes Thanksgiving can be a total downer for us eco-loving, veggie folks. Sure, there’s plenty of vegan deliciousness to eat – I mean have you TRIED my pumpkin pie? But even still, knowing that millions and millions of turkeys are slaughtered each year for the sake of “tradition†can be kind of depressing. Well, Emily Deschanel and Farm Sanctuary are working hard to change all that with Farm Sanctuary’s Celebration FOR The Turkeys!
Deschanel – who Ecorazzi has met and can vouch for her extreme coolness— will be spending her Thanksgiving at Farm Sanctuary’s Orland, CA property as she hosts their cruelty-free Thanksgiving event. Can’t make it to Cali? Across the country at their Watkins Glen, NY shelter, Keith McHenry, founder of Food Not Bombs, will play host for the East Coast celebration! Now sadly, both of these events are currently sold out, but there IS a waiting list and we highly recommend jumping on that.
But no worries if you can’t make it — there are still plenty of ways to get involved! For a one-time $25 adoption fee you can participate in Farm Sanctuary’s Adopt-A-Turkey program and receive a special certificate with a color photo of and fun details about your new friend, a Farm Sanctuary membership for one year, and a one-year subscription to Sanctuary – their quarterly magazine. You can also choose to home adopt by completing an adoption application.
As always, a big vegan hug to Emily Deschanel for leading by example and making this holiday season a compassionate one. Rock on, Emster!

Nigel Barker Holding NYC Benefit Screening Of ‘A Sealed Fate’ For HSUS
Filed under: animals, campaigns, events, events: nyc, film-tv, movies — parrish @ 3:50 pm
Just a few days ago Ecorazzi told you that Nigel Barker was working to end the brutal slaughtering of seals in Canada with the Humane Society of the United States and slowly becoming America’s Next Top Activist (which actually sounds like a really good show…have your people call my people).
If that story caught your interest, you might be elated to hear that Nigel will be holding a benefit screening of his documentary film A Sealed Fate in support of The Humane Society of the United States on the Upper East Side at the AMC Loews Theater (3rd Ave btwn E.71st and 72nd) on Tuesday, November 18th, 2008.
Not only will you get to watch what I’m sure will be a touching film, but Nigel will lead a post-performance discussion and Q&A session with campaigners from The Humane Society of the United States Fur-Free Campaign and Humane Society International Protect Seals Campaign to discuss ways that we can help end Canada’s cruel seal hunt.
You really have no excuse not to be there since tickets are JUST $25 EACH! Seating will begin at 6pm for a 7pm go, and while a limited number of tickets may be available at the theater, it’s best to get your advanced online tickets.
For more info, visit the Humane Society’s website! Yo people, the seals need YOUR HELP!

Dreamworks Donates To Conservation International For Kung Fu Panda
Filed under: animals, film-tv, movies — parrish @ 12:26 pm
While I’m not generally a big fan of animation, I AM a big fan of Jack Black and so naturally I’m all about Kung Fu Panda! This week (to every 5-year-old’s enjoyment), the Dreamworks film was released on DVD and whispers are already circulating that a sequel is on its way.
To celebrate the success, Dreamworks Animation is partnering with Conservation International and giving a little something back to the pandas. The production team recently visited the Sichuan province where they spent time at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
There they had the chance to observe pandas playing in a natural habitat, made sketches and filmed the bears for later reference. Oh yeah, and they also donation $1 million to help with conservation efforts for the iconic bears. I mean, okay!

The 3-Legged Dog That Inspired Barack Obama To Adopt
Filed under: animals, politics — michael @ 8:52 am

So much has been said over the Obama family’s upcoming decision regarding the “first dog” — but long before his road to the White House was clear, the President-elect had already made up his mind to adopt.
Back in 2005, Jana Kohl reached out to Barack Obama regarding dog adoption and her larger campaign to end puppy mills. It was then that the Senator promised Kohl he would adopt if his family ever made the decision to get a dog. In addition, along with 40 other notables, Obama posed for a photo shoot for Kohl’s book A Rare Breed Of Love. His co-star in that photo was “Baby”, a hypoallergenic 3-legged rescue dog and puppy mill survivor. From the release,
Baby, who was rescued from a puppy-mill after nine years of confinement in a cage, cannot bark because her vocal chords were cut and also lost a limb due to maltreatment. Since being rescued and subsequently adopted by Dr. Kohl, Baby spends her time advocating for other abused dogs and animals. Baby’s plight also inspired a Congressional bill that would end the inhumane practice of lifetime confinement of breeding dogs. “Baby’s Bill” was proposed by bipartisan members of the House and Senate and will be voted upon in the next Congressional session.
Great shot of Barack and Baby, right? January 20th 2009 can’t come soon enough. To find out more about A Rare Breed Of Love, jump here.

The Green Quote: Paris Hilton Receives Canine Gift In Korea
Filed under: animals — parrish @ 11:57 am
“Some guy gave me her for free. He said, ‘I really want to give you this dog. It would be an honor.’ So I said, ‘OK! Can I bring her back to America?’”
- Paris Hilton discussing her trip to Korea and the subsequent “gift” she was given while passing a Korean pet-store. As previously discussed, Paris Hilton has 456,329,992,012,333 animals and just loves supporting breeders and pet-stores…YIKES! Â
What do you think about this exchange, readers? Should Paris have accepted the pooch and ”rescued” it from it’s pet-store fate? Or was this just more pet-store supporting yuckiness? Chime in and share your thoughts!

Rumor: Will The Obama Family Go With A Two-Dog Strategy?
Filed under: animals, politics — michael @ 5:06 pm
Amidst the challenges facing President-elect Barack Obama, one issue that continues to create strong interest is what type of dog the first family is planning to bring with them to the White House.
Perhaps all the gloomy news that’s out there lately is reason for entertaining such a topic but as we’ve mentioned earlier — as as stated by President-elect Obama — the family is trying really hard to stand by their commitment to adopting a dog from a shelter. One of our spies, however, spotted a video clip from The Rachel Maddow Show that suggests perhaps as many as two dogs will be adopted. From the video,
“I was backstage at Grant Park after the Obama speech Tuesday night,” said MSNBC Analyst Lawrence O’Donnell, “and I overheard a certain moment — the future first lady discussing the possibility (at someone else’s suggestion) of maybe a two-dog strategy. There could be a two-dog strategy. It was a speculative discussion, there was no commitment, but it remains a possibility at this point.”
Now that we’ve sufficienty blown your mind, you can get back to worrying about the economy. Or perhaps we can further delay such depression by showing you a video of a chicken hatching some kittens. You’re welcome.
Thanks to Linton for the tip!

Leona Lewis Continues To Speak Out Against Fur
Filed under: animals, fashion — parrish @ 1:01 pm

As Ecorazzi previously reported, Leona Lewis not only regularly speaks out against cruelty to animals, but seriously practices what she preaches!
Earlier this year, Leona rejected a more than $1.7 million offer from Harrods boss Mohammed Fayed to open a summer sale because the department store sells fur. About the incident, she told Hello! magazine: “I don’t have anything against the store or the owner - all I am against is fur. I think it’s totally cruel and I can’t endorse or support anything related to that as it’s against my beliefs, no matter what you pay me.”
Now, fresh after Kate Winslet’s fur controversy, Lewis is once again speaking out against the cruel product, saying: “It’s such an old school way of doing things. I can’t begin to imagine that people who know all these animals have been killed to make a coat can still wear it. There must be something seriously wrong with them.”
Here at the Razz we absolutely adore Leona for staying true to her values and leading by example. Keep up all the great work!
