SIGN BARRY
We aren’t gonna win anything scoring less than 3 runs a game….I think best offensive “explosion” in last 15 games was 6 runs…..

PECOTA's weighted mean has Bonds at a .308 GPA
Longoria’s is .293 and leads the team.
Huh.

Bonds will get you a lot of intentional walks...
...and not much else.

Hahahahaha
You forgot he’s the greatest hitter ever right? He had over a 1.000 OPS last season.

Yeah, having a SLG% last year that is about the same as Josh Hamilton's this year would be awful
by td32 on Jul 24, 2008 11:42 PM EDT

Actually, Bonds SLG was 23 points higher....
That sucks. An OPS+ of 170…who could use that?

If Aaron put those numbers up last year, then we should...
But keep up the excellent comparisons

why any PROFESSIONAL ballclub would want to touch that, is beyond me.

Because they want to win?

So the following players were never Texas Rangers?
Manny Alexander, Chad Allen, Kevin Brown, José Canseco, Eric Gagné, Juan Gonzalez, Jerry Hairston, Jr., Mike Judd, Gary Matthews, Jr., John Rocker, David Segui, Mike Stanton, Ismael Valdez, Randy Velarde, Steve Woodard, Gregg Zaun

And if a team signs Bonds to make themselves better
It’s suddenly their fault he used drugs from 99-2004?

Where are the calls?
To Release Giambi, Pettite, Sheffield, Tejada, Roberts, Ankiel, Matthews Jr., Glaus, Cust, Guillen, and all of the countless others that were using PED’s during that period. Why does Fernando Vina still get to be a commentator on ESPN? If MLB and its sponsors would take accountability for each and every one of them, then I would agree that Bonds should be blackballed. But I don’t see that happening anytime soon, and as such he has every bit the right as everyone else to play this tainted game which we enjoy so much.
by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 25, 2008 12:16 AM EDT
up 0 recs
Not to mention
MLB had no testing at the time. If you think its ok to single out any individual for a common offense, then why shouldn’t we make an example out of Josh Hamilton for his drug usage? Think of the children!!!!

Seriously
If you’ve got a problem with BOnds personally, just come out and say it…Suggesting he isn’t an elite player just makes you look dumb

Like we said before..he didn't do anything that most of the elite players of that
generation were doing…Hell GIAMBI admitted it and he’s playing..Bonds has never been proven guilty of anything..including perjury

To be concerned about you team’s on-field success. If we were hovering around .500, we wouldn’t be clamoring for change. But as is, we want the opportunity to make the playoffs. So in that regard, we are desperate. If you aren’t feeling desperate near the deadline, there are only 3 reasons why: 1. You don’t care that much. 2. You root for a shitty team. 3. You root for the Red Sox.

Bonds isn’t coming to Tampa, lets be realistic.
We need a few players to step up at the plate, we also need to stop making excuses for some of them.
I would love to take Mark Teixeira in a trade but that’s not very likely either, so where do we go from here?

Do we give up Brignac, Niemann and another prospect..
For Nady and Marte..I don’t think so…They’re wanting to unload Jack Wilson and apparently Brignac is on their radar (which answers why if their really was a Pirates scout at game recently he was scouting Brignac, not Price)
by arkansasraysfan on Jul 24, 2008 11:56 PM EDT 0 recs
I know that...someone said the Pirates were sending a scout to check out our prospects
They insinuated it was Price…

It's going to be really funny/sad
If the Yanks do end up signing him, and he leads them to the playoffs. Whatever team is left watching in October will have nobody to blame but themselves. If the Rays think the PR backlash from signing BOnds is bad, what do they think will happen if he hits 4 home runs from September 12-14?
by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 25, 2008 12:24 AM EDT

that PR shit is overrated, all of the guys would be pumped up to have him in that clubhouse
if they are feeling down, all they need to do is look down a couple of lockers and look at the legend and get pumped up that the rays signed someone because they dont care what everyone else thinks about bonds

RJ..I never said he was at either game...You don't remember the post..
You were the one telling the guy you doubted they were at the game at all…HE said they sent a scout…
by arkansasraysfan on Jul 25, 2008 12:14 AM EDT 0 recs
There was a Pirates scout, he was at a Montgomery Biscuits game.
They’ve also been scouting Durham.

Then they had scouts at both games...what does it matter..They're looking at our prospects.
Still wouldn’t give up what they’re wanting for Nady and Marte unless they’ll take Niemann in place of Davis and ifthey were scouting Price they’re just insane.

major league deal
sign him now! barry doesnt deserve a minor league deal, thats like telling brett favre he is going to be a backup for GB, add barry in here and it would be like trading for someone without giving up crap and then all we can focus on is improving the bullpen

not bad of an idea, give him a couple of games in AAA and then promote him
our lineup is scuffling right now and add in a guy who gets on base almost half the time and that offense gets a major lift, who would be gone if we sign barry? it is most likely going to be gabe gross unfornately, since i dont see them dumping floyd and gomes will probably still be around until rocco comes back
by RaysOfHope on Jul 25, 2008 12:32 AM EDT 0 recs
I'd keep Gross over Floyd...Gomes probably gone IF Rocco makes it back
by arkansasraysfan on Jul 25, 2008 12:42 AM EDT
up 0 recs
even if gomes is DFA i dont think he have seen the last of him
id keep gross over floyd as well but im not sure that the rays will, if rocco does come back and gomes gets DFA i think that gomes will be back in september and will help this team with outfield depth and he is a smart baserunner, but i think some team will pick up gomes and hope that they can turn him around since he has all that power but no discipline at the plate

You're probably right
People often overlook his baser unning. For a big slow white guy 8 steals in limited playing time isn’t bad..To be honest I do get worried sometimes about him fighting all those fights, he has had a heart attack in the past so wouldn’t want him to have another..lol..He does have ridiculous power potential though and would be a good keep as DH/Spare OF when rosters expand.

Just wikipedia him....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonny_Gomes
“Gomes suffered a heart attack on Christmas Eve, 2002, the result of a clogged artery, despite being in playing condition (he reported having 8% body fat at the time). He ignored the symptoms for 27 hours, even sleeping through it one night, before going to the hospital after he briefly blacked out and stopped breathing. His doctors said he would not have survived sleeping through it a second night. As a result of the heart attack, the team doctor of the Rays has to keep nitroglycerin pills on-hand in case he has another one.”

Gomes really isn't slow at all
His terrible fielding prowess comes from a complete inability to properly read and break on fly balls. He actually has good speed.

He seems to show a good knowledge
of when to steal. Without looking at the stats it seems when he does attempt he usually succeeds.

I think I started talking about this with someone in a recent GDT
I feel that for all of his offensive struggles at the plate, that when he has managed to get on base, he’s been anything but a liability. He’s had a little bit of luck (someone mentioned the White Sox series @ the trop), but for the most part he’s been a very very smart baserunner.

Winning cures any clubhouse problems.
Signing Bonds would not be a clubhouse problem. The PR might take a hit but who gives a damn if he wins games. That is what the FO is supposed to do, put the best possible team out on the field. They need to sign Barry, one of the best hitters in the game still, and make this offense a powerhouse.
