The Foreign Oil Problem is Just an Oil Problem

The sad reality of modern-day political wrangling seems to make the development of a progressive, sustainable energy policy almost impossible.

We need bold and transcendent leadership, a blueprint that will not only revitalize our economy, but reverse the damage we’re doing to the planet.

Instead we get … John McCain advocating offshore drilling! Woo!

At this point, it should be blatantly obvious to just about everyone that change is inevitable - the only question is whether it will be a quick transition to an economy powered by new energy sources, or a slow and painful decline, powered by our inability to read the increasingly clear writing on the wall…

Democrats Won’t Unite Overnight

One fantastic victory speech by Barack Obama.

One similarly terrific concession speech by Hillary Clinton.

That’s all it took to bring the Democratic Party together after 36 million votes split nearly down the middle and five months of primaries, right?

If only it were that simple.

The political cartoon below, entitled, “On to November,†is a sequel to a cartoon we ran in mid-May about the fragmentation of the party.

It’s not just stubborn HRC supporters, either - a Democratic Congressman even said this week that he won’t endorse Obama. This may take awhile …

The Aftermath of the Democratic Race: Onward!

Sen. Barack Obama may have survived to win the nomination of the Democratic party, but to borrow some boxing terms, this heavyweight political fight went the full 15 rounds with no knockout punches delivered.

Rival Sen. Hillary Clinton beat him up pretty badly in the past few months, but he emerged victorious. Someone had to. At this point, what’s done is done. All we can do is move on and focus on the ultimate prize.

Onward, we go.

Hitting the Road: Summer 2008 Style

The recent surge in gas prices leaves us conflicted.

While no one likes to pay more money, this kind of explosion in prices is the only thing that will get many Americans to reassess our dependence on foreign oil - not to mention the urgency of global warming.

Let’s face it, most people don’t care about polar bears, nor do they make the connection that cutting back on fossil fuels is good for national security and the environment. Their bank accounts? That’s another story.

Sadly, it will get worse before it gets better, and (despite what a pair of pandering candidates and their stupid gas tax holiday tell you) the already-strapped middle class will disproportionately bear the burden.

The cartoon below, entitled “Hitting the Road,†tries to capture the current mood of the energy crisis causing widespread economic panic.

A Word From the Newest Barack Obama Supporter

Sen. Barack Obama is closing in on the Democratic nomination for President of the United States, earning the right to represent his political party in what many consider the most important election in our nation’s history.

But the road is long. Obama will encounter many issues, face new challenges and must overcome obstacles on his path to the White House every day.

In fact, the fate of the Barack Obama campaign - and our very nation - may hang on one all-important, controversial political ally: His lapel pin…

The Fragmentation of the Democratic Party

This site, among many others, recently discussed the pros and cons of whether Sen. Hillary Clinton should stay in the Democratic race.

It’s a debate that can (and will) go on ad nauseam - is she making Sen. Barack Obama stronger, or sabotaging the party’s chances in November?

The political cartoon below explores this increasingly evident side-effect of the protracted 2008 Democratic presidential nominating contest…

Pandering at the Pump

We love political cartoons, and Bill Mitchell, a former newspaper cartoonist who’s abandoned print media for the online world (gotta love animated GIFs), is one of our favorites. Check out his great work if you haven’t before.

Earlier, we posted a political cartoon dealing with the staggering cost ($5k/second) of the Iraq war and the farce of the U.S. economic stimulus plan.

Now here’s one about the proposed gas tax holiday, which some presidential hopefuls support. Note that Barack Obama is conspicuously absent below.

Shameless pandering, anyone? Fill ‘er up!

Cartoon source: here. More Mitchell here.

Stimulating an Endless War Economy

The Iraq war and the U.S. economy are both in a desperate state, yet the brilliant Bush administration doesn’t see a connection between the two.

Some media reports have estimated the cost of the war in Iraq at around $5,000 per second. Despite this staggering cost, there’s been no apparent effort to figure out how we should pay for it.

Nor is there an end in sight. Details, right?

The political cartoon below addresses this issue - and the insignificance of the supposed economic stimulus plan put into effect this spring.

We Now Pause For a Word From the Middle Class

The never-ending Democratic race — and its increasingly nasty tone - are a subject of great debate and concern. At the end of the day, the election isn’t really about Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama… at least it shouldn’t be. Right?

With the Pennsylvania primary finally over, the cartoon below tries to put the real, often-overlooked concerns of Americans back into focus.

“Elitist” Attacks Don’t Hold Water

How does an “elitist†charge possibly stick against an individual with Sen. Barack Obama’s background? This entire line of attack by his rivals — sparked by Obama’s remarks about rural Pennsylvanians at a fundraiser - not only ignores a much larger issue, but it is disingenuous and simply not the case.

The reactions to Obama’s supposed gaffe, termed “Bitter-gate” or “Cling-gate,” are also the subject of the cartoon below, entitled “Who’s Out of Touch?â€

Out of Touch? Really?
