Motion Powered Mobile Phones Due 2009

The possibility of a mobile phone that charges while you walk around might seem far-fetched but according to M2E Power we might see devices featuring kinetic batteries on the market as early as 2009.

The M2E Power company was created last year to investigate how kinetic engery could be harnessed to power batteries in small commercial devices such as mobile phones as well as cars and military devices. According to their website this technology isn’t far away from market:

Based on the Faraday principle the system works by passing a magnet up and down through a coil as the device moves up and down during the natural action of walking or running. Tests have indicated a performance increase of up to 700 percent over similar kinetic technologies.

Initially the battery is expected to retail at around $50 and be an external add-on for mobile phones. However once the technology matures manufacturers will be able to include kinetic batteries as standard in mobile devices.
