The 2008 Democratic National Convention will deliver a sizeable impact on the City and County of Denver and the seven counties that encompass the greater metro area. While the main event will occur each night at the Pepsi Center in downtown Denver, hotel rooms, restaurants, entertainment venues and transportation throughout the region will be utilized to their highest potential for the duration of the week. Denver is no stranger to hosting major national events and has a proven track record of playing both a successful and gracious host to major national events including World Youth Day in 1993 and the Summit of Eight in 1997.

Denver Spotlight

The convention will bring unprecedented media attention on the city of Denver. Of the tens of thousands of people that will travel to Denver for the week of the Democratic National Convention, some 15,000 of those will be members of the local, national and international media. During the week of the convention, radio, newspaper, and television stations alike will be dominated by the daily events and speeches at the convention. Audiences from around the globe will tune in to watch the convention unfold and will also discover that Denver offers tremendous cultural diversity including first class art museums, eight professional sports teams, a first class aquarium and a lively, revitalized downtown.

Economic Impact

The Denver 2008 Convention Host Committee is acquiring and managing millions of dollars to prepare the city for the convention and host its guests. These funds will have a direct positive impact on the local economy. During the convention, more than 35,000 visitors will fill the region’s restaurants, hotels, downtown and entertainment venues. We expect a minimum of $160-$200 million dollars in additional revenue to come to the area.

photo: Governor Ritter "The convention will have a significant economic impact not just on Denver, but it will have a ripple effect across the entire state and the West. This will be great for Denver and great for Colorado. A major reason we were able to compete against a city like New York and ultimately win ... is because Denver made important investments in infrastructure."

-- Bill Ritter, Governor of Colorado

photo: Mayor Hickenlooper "Like the Democratic Party itself, the Mile High City embodies the 21st century ideals of economic strength, environmental consciousness, regional collaboration, cutting-edge technological infrastructure and visionary zeal that will help lead America in the year 2008 and beyond."

-- John Hickenlooper, Mayor of Denver
