![[image]](http://mowser.com/img?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.democracymeansyou.com%2Fsaveamerica%2Fimages%2Fsave-america_04.jpg)
This all got started in Chapel Hill, where one small bookshop got support from a large segment of the community. (Independence Day for Independent Bookstores — PaulAaron.com). But this is too important to keep it to just one store. We want to save all of America.
It's a simple idea with far-reaching consequences:
Democracy thrives in a culture of independent, local, small businesses. Democracy suffers in an environment of huge, distant, centralized businesses. Feed the lions and they will eat you. Stop feeding the lions and start feeding your neighbors instead.
Take just the first FOUR DAYS every month:
What we are doing is increasing the power local business owners have, supporting our local economies, and decreasing the power huge corporations and those they support have. Its one more small thing to do. Do it consistently and it will make a difference.
What the Republicans call "pro-business" is pro-big-business, not pro-independent-business. Their "pro-business" policies are putting thousands and thousands of small businesses OUT OF BUSINESS in favor of huge, centralized business that can afford to donate millions to their campaigns.
For example:
Wal-Mart is the world's largest retailer, and a perfect example of big business gone wrong. Every dollar you spend at Wal-Mart is a dollar that goes to the Republican Party. Wal-Mart is one of the largest contributors to the G.O.P.--in order to create legislation that supports their destructive business practices.
For more on Wal-Mart, visit http://www.democracymeansyou.com/walmart/WALMARTREPORT/
Here is our opportunity to change all that. We just need, on a regular basis, to support our neighbors' locally owned stores as much as possible. Pay the extra few dollars to keep your neighbor in business-and let them know why you shop there. It may keep you in business, too.
The movie "Grapes of Wrath" sums it all up. Go rent it from your locally owned video store. Buy the book from your local independent bookstore. Make change here, now, with your dollars.
WANT TO DO MORE?
Are you an author, poet, musician, business owner? Or want to volunteer to help? We're going to make small business stay alive. That's real democracy, and real America.
This started as part of a series to benefit www.BranchsBookshop.com and small stores everywhere. July 1-4 in Chapel Hill, NC, local residents have put together this event to help save a struggling business they love. You can do the same in your town.
Start by listing your local bookstore or other independent business here. Tell them about our movement! If you're planning an event, include the date and a description. Make it happen in your town-and save our country one independent business at a time.

Visit www.supportlocalsmallbusiness.com It is still a work in progress but it will exist as a means to showcase local business (in my region first and then expend to other areas) and discuss the value in supporting your local farms, shopkeepers, service providers and the consequences of not doing so. Thanks!

I work at Wal-Mart, Get paid by Wal-Mart, and most of all, hate Wal-Mart. I don't shop there, I tell everyone to stay away from Wal-Mart, when someone walks in and can't find something, I send them to one of the local small businesses. This is how I support my community. I can't find a job around this place that pays high enough to support my living expenses, mainly because the 80 huge retailers like T.J.Max, K-Mart, Ames, Home Depot, And of course, Wal-Mart takes business away from the small businesses around my community! I hate it, and Wal-Mart is the only way to make money in my town. Someone if not everyone, Petition Wal-Mart Practices!!!!!! "I hate products and services, but I love creations and ideas. -Lawrence R. Wright"

I already get most of my books and CDs at local independent stores. I am forced to shop at chain groceries, as there are no alternatives, save the Farmer's Market, which is too far to drive to every week. But I do go about once a month, and I do try my best to patronize fewer chain stores. P.S. Target, the "bohemian liberal alternative to Spraw-Mart," also gives most of its money to the neo-cons. Yup.

What an awesome idea! I already boycott WalMart EVERY day and have asked others to do the same. Another black eye for Walmart, as if we need any more reasons to boycott them: they allow their pharmacists to deny the morning-after contraceptive pill to women, and don't stock that pill. But they do sell Viagra of course. :(
