Tips For Being A Good Self-Coach.
Excerpted from The Asian Wall Street Journal
Written by Kevin Voight

Debra Benton, executive coach, offers tips for being a good self-coach:

• Good Self-Analysis
All coaching begins with self-evaluation. Ms. Benton suggests you write down your life story. Try to go beyond facts and dates and answer questions such as: what did you think you wanted to be when you grew up? What was your first boss like? What things inspire passion in you? What is your relationship like with your colleagues: What skills do you want to work on?…..Asking questions helps you put yourself in perspective.

• Get Feedback From Others
For another viewpoint, ask colleagues, superiors and subordinates to analyze your performance…..Questions you could ask them include: How well do they think you work with people in a wide variety of circumstances? How well do you admit responsibility for failures or mistakes? How well do you champion other colleagues" ideas?…..[ask yourself] is the feedback true? Why do people think that way? "What"s most important here is looking for patterns, for areas you need to work on," Ms. Benton says.

• Put New Behavior Into Practice
Whether it"s improving your smile or working on team-building skills, a common gripe for executives is that new behavior "feels fake." New behavior is always uncomfortable, Ms. Benton says..."[you] have to test it, try it out, practice it, discard it if it doesn"t work." Part of putting new behavior into practice is clear, simple goal-setting. Then ask yourself - is this helping me reach that goal?

The keys are to instill self-confidence, which requires self-discipline and "attitude management." Ms. Benton says. "Self approval requires you first convince yourself, by developing a positive opinion of yourself, appearing positive and acting positive."
