Google App Engine offers a full-stack, hosted, automatically scalable web application platform. The service consists of Python application servers that interface to BigTable and GFS data store services. The combination of Python scripting and data store access should allow developers to create complete web application that run entirely on Google’s computing infrastructure. Google also provides an SDK for local development and site monitoring tools for measuring traffic and machine usage.
The Google App Engine service is free up to a certain usage level, after which customers may be charged for incremental usage.
Google’s offering competes with Amazon’s Web Services suite, including EC2, S3, SQS, and SimpleDB.
CrunchBase has its own App Engine tester application on appengine.crunchbase.com.
