Lambeth Conference update: Saturday evening
19/07/2008 23:00:00

Above: Rabbit cartoon, which has been particularly enjoyed by the bishops over the last few days. It is of course an in-joke which relies on your knowing that the University of Kent campus is overrun by the creatures. The full version of the cartoon is here - more should be appearing very soon.
The bishops have come to the end of their three days of retreat before the conference proper starts. Today has been a quieter day, with the bishops being here at the university rather than at the cathedral. This morning they heard the fifth and final retreat address by the Archbishop of Canterbury. There hasn't been much to report on - I visited the press office earlier and the section where the journalists do their typing was entirely deserted. They had probably all gone home for their tea.
This afternoon there was a short service in the big top to welcome all of the ecumenical representatives to the conference. This was preceded by a (closed) reception for the ecumenical participants - photos are available on the conference Flickr page, which, incidentally, is one of the best places to find out what is going on. The four photographers usually upload their pictures very soon after the events they are capturing.
Tomorrow there is a big service in the Cathedral to which the bishops, spouses and people more important than the conference cartoonist are invited (I'm really not bitter - I fully understand that space is limited and I do, in any case, have a lot of work to be getting on with). Check the Flickr group in the afternoon if colourful vestments are your thing.
The first press conference is tomorrow, so more news stories should start to appear. Tomorrow afternoon also includes a plenary session entitled 'An introduction to the Conference Programme'. In the evening there is a concert by the Korean Choir.
On a personal note: today's excitement was causing 'a situation' amongst the university security staff by needing to move my camper van, which had been inadvertently parked in the car park reserved for tomorrow's cathedral-trip coaches. Some men in a van had to be summoned to remove the very permanent-looking barrier. Sorry everyone.
I spent nearly six hours in my cartoon tent today, doing some drawing and talking to the bishops, spouses and others who have come in to look at my drawings (See a photograph taken with my namesake here). It has been encouraging to see my work being enjoyed by people from all sorts of provinces of the Communion, including some for whom I imagine my style is an alien concept. Whatever else might be written about the Lambeth bishops over the next couple of weeks my experience is that they are not afraid to laugh at themselves. And that can't be a bad thing.
FYI - your latest cartoon post on the Lambeth site seems to be broken, and the pdf shows broken link symbols where the images are supposed to go.
Can you tell I'm a Dave Walker cartoon addict?

It makes me a bit more hopeful.
