Goldie's Bible Study Week 2
1 Thessalonians 2:1-12
1 Thessalonians 2:1-12
[1]For yourselves, brethren, know our entrance in unto you, that it was not in vain: [2]But even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention. [3]For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile: [4]But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts. [5]For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloak of covetousness; God is witness: [6]Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ. [7]But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children: [8]So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us. [9]For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God. [10]Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe: [11]As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children, [12]That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.
Spitefully Treated...
Even though they were treated horribly at Philippi, they kept spreading God's Word. They let nothing phase them or discourage them from doing what they were told. They went out and shared dispite the ahtred and rejection that came with it. They followed the Great Commission with no questions and all their heart.
Not as Pleasing Men...
Paul and his group of men were not after pleasing men. All they wanted to do was serve God by following His Commission. Even though God test our hearts and loves us enough to build us stronger by trials and temptations, they still wanted to follow Him. Their heart was totally on fire for God. They did not seek to please men, just as Jesus didn't please men with soft and fluffy messages, His disciples did the same.
As a Nursing Mother...
Paul would do anything for those that got saved and those who were lost, just as a mother hen would do for her chicks. But it is not a flattering love, it is gentle yes, but not flattering. Just as a mother who truly loves her children, she will show them where they are wrong so they can walk in the truth. Paul was the same way. He gently proclaimed the truth and pointed out what was wrong. He was so affectionate to these people that he would give up his life for them so that they could hear and experience the Love of Christ. And just as a mother seeing her children walking in truth, so was Paul when he saw this church walking rightly.
For Laboring Night and Day...
Paul did not ask for anything in return for what he did for the church. His reward was seeing God working in the church, and his children walking in truth. Also, he did not want to burden them or act like a false witness. At that time their was a lot of false witness and all they were after was money. They would do whatever to get money. Paul wanted to make sure that they understood he wasn't after earthly things, but after God's glory.
Exhorted... Comforted... Charged...
Paul also acted like a father who really truly loved his son to the church.
Exhorted-To urge by strong, often stirring argument, admonition, advice, or appeal. As a father he encouraged and urged strongly after what is right. Told his sons what is right and how to live that way.
Comforted-To soothe in time of affliction or distress. A good father will be their for his children when they are hurting and comfrot them, soothe them and remind them of the truth.
Charged-To instruct or urge authoritatively; command As a father he would command his children to walk in truth to do as he says. He expects the best from them, but still loves them.
Questions...
Do you let rejection of people kill your fire for Christ?
Do you take what people say about you and turn away from God's calling?
Do you make things flattering to people so they will listen?
Where is your heart in your ministry? Do you look like another false witness after money?
Do you truly love the unsaved?
Do you truly love those other Christians who are struggling?
I pray this blesses you...
