[image]U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald has fired off a letter to Tony Peraica's office, a bit peeved over a door-hanger flier that he feels implies his endorsement of Peraica in his run for State's Attorney. The flier has the tag line "U.S. Attorney's Office Needs Help Fighting Corruption in Cook County" underneath photos of the two men. Fitzgerald's letter emphasizes that he has not endorsed any candidate, and especially not one that "[he did] not believe [he has] yet had occasion to meet." Peraica denies he was trying to imply any endorsement, rather was just blowing kisses to his hero:

[Peraica] lavished praise on Fitzgerald and said he only meant to emulate his corruption-busting approach.

"It is because of your example and that of your office that the public in Cook County has come to believe that some government officials actually care to protect the public against political corruption," Peraica said. "It is only with admiration that I seek to follow your example."

A spokesman for his opponent Anita Alvarez slammed him for being misleading, while the Green party candidate Thomas O'Brien was all, uh, can we maybe just focus on stuff like the increase in shootings and the death penalty? What, you mean the issues?! Oh, you silly Green party candidate! [S-T]

If you're feeling masochistic, you may want to head over to the Sun-Times website where Robert Novak has returned with a new column. The Prince of Darkness continues the notion that his brain tumor was the reason for him striking a pedestrian with his Corvette, and describes his current treatment at Duke whose cancer team was recommended to him by Ted Kennedy's wife, Vicki. Novak says that the reactions to his cancer have been "mostly compassionate", proving that he doesn't read Chicagoist comments.

Back in April, the Bleeding Heart Bakery at 1955 W. Belmont created a line of Top Chef inspired cupcakes, one of which was a spicy chocolate version topped with a faux bacon rose. At the time, we pined for a real bacon cupcake. Well, Bleeding Heart heeded our call and here it is -- an organic bacon peanut butter chocolate cupcake. Good god. We have not tried one of these bad boys yet, but we will remedy that situation shortly.

Photo of a neckbeard in its natural habitat by massdistraction Why cover rampant city and county corruption, two wars, or a historical presidential election when you can write about a several year old fashion trend in a story that seems lifted out of The Mash? A reporter at the Trib just noticed Kyle Orton's aversion to razors, and thinks the Bears' starting QB just might be onto something big: Neckbeards, in general, spark interest because...

Cubs Slide Continues Once again, the Cubs' pitching staff got shelled and the offense failed to produced as the Cincinnati Reds slammed the Cubs 10-2 Friday night. Starter Ted Lilly only lasted two innings, giving up five runs before being relieved by Jon Lieber who gave up a grand slam to Jay Bruce. If you're counting, that's six losses in a row for the North Siders. Manager Lou Piniella said, "We're going to have to...

Illinois Measles On The Rise

Illinois had more cases of measles than any other state this year, and according to the CDC, most of the people infected were unvaccinated children who are homeschooled. According to Cook County Public Health Department's Catherine Counard, not vaccinating a child affects more than just one person. "[Parents are] making a choice for the entire community. Because they're putting others at risk. And if their children become infected and expose a newborn infant who then dies, thats a pretty serious consequence." [WBEZ]

The tiny gallery on the second floor of the Threadless shop in Lakeview usually hosts artwork of the graphic design sort, not really a surprise due to the nature of the company. In the same vein, the new show opening at Threadless gallery this evening is a celebration of printmakers and print collectives based in Chicago. All artists featured at the show have had their work printed by Threadless PRINTS.* Featured artists include Mat Daly,...

This has not been a very good week for Chicago baseball fans. Sure, both of our teams entered September in first place but it seems like players named Carlos are working to derail our Crosstown Series fantasies this week. On the heels of Cubs fans' panic attacks over the state of Carlos Zambrano's shoulder, now Sox fans are now getting the gut check. The team revealed this afternoon that Carlos Quentin has a broken bone...

Throughout the month of September, you are cordially invited to spend your weekends touring fancy homes (the $900,000–$4,000,000 kind of fancy homes) during the fifth annual Chicago Luxury Home Tour. Presented by Midwest Home Chicago, 22 homes will be on display throughout the Chicagoland area. Think Hindsdale, Naperville, Glenview, not Gold Coast, Bucktown, Lincoln Park. It's a bit of driving around but after perusing the photo gallery (Hello, George Costanza-worthy Weilert Custom Homes bathroom,...

Things Are Tough All Over

De La Costa, the Nuevo Latino restaurant in River North, was recently sold by its parent company. But the $1 million offer by buyer Dock 465 LLC is half of what Panacea Partners LLC is asking. Additionally, the sale could be moot if Dock 465 can't obtain a liquor license from the city. [Crain's]
