Dell Intros Personal Laser Printer 1100 For Just $99

Dell has always been big with its custom printer models (which usually are Lexmark designs), but this is the first time they’ve crossed below the $100 barrier for a laser printer.

Dell Sub-$100 Laser Printer 1100

The new Dell Laser Printer 1100 has been introduced at a $99 pricepoint, which is great for students, homes, and small offices. It can print up to 16 pages per minute, and has a max resolution of 600dpi. The 1100 has 2MB of RAM built-in, which is not upgradeable, and a full toner drum is rated at about 5000 pages.

A pretty attractive intro into the low-end laser market, to say the least. Consumers should note that like many low-end lasers, there’s no ‘rasterizing’ technology (like Postscript or HP PCL, a language to define the page versus actual pixels) in the printer – rather, the computer rasterizes each page in RAM as pixels, then pipes it up to the printer for imaging onto the paper.

A comparable printer would be something like the Brother HL series, which is usually around $100, and is the printer I’ve used for years. I’d love to get a Dell Laser Printer 1100 in for a head-to-head battle against my old HL-1240! The HL-1240 also has 2MB of memory and rated at 12ppm. The new replacement for the HL-1240 is the new HL-2040 model (still pricing around $120), which has 8MB (non-upgradeable) and is rated at 20ppm. So the Dell looks to be decent competition. Of course, the Brother models all support Mac printer

Most of these $100 laser printers are actually superior far as print quality and print speed compared to the more expensive models just a few years back. Keep in mind though, that they are only able to sell them cheap because they know they will get you in the backend when you have to purchase the consumables from them. Be sure to look around for generic/compatible supplies within a year of any printer’s release when they become available.
