With the WiFi3100, once you’ve signed up for Viper’s VOIP service, you can make calls from any WiFi hotspot in the world – with only per-minute charges.
Looking like a pretty standard ‘bar phone’, the WiFi3100 actually is a VOIP-only device, allowing you to make VOIP calls on the Viper network from any WiFi-enabled location. The WiFi3100 supports standard DHCP for configuration, and 802.1x authentication, plus phone features like 3-way calling and call waiting/transfer/forward.
The unit is small, weighs in at just 111g, and runs on a rechargeable LiIon battery. Battery life is up to 4 hours talk time and 80-100 hours standby, with a quick 2-3 hour recharge. Not too shabby for an all-in-one unit. We’ll have to see whether it can hold up against the onslaught of Skype products and platforms (Skype on a Smartphone would seem to make the WiFi3100 redundant…).
Seems like an almost no-brainer for home VOIP users, just because it is a decent cordless unit and you can move around the house anywhere your WiFi already covers. For folks with limited coverage, Viper has other VOIP products that you can plug a standard phone into, so you can use whatever phones you already have around.
