The creators of Hertz NeverLost continue to dominate with new RoadMate models, the 760 being their new flagship.
The new Magellan RoadMate 760 takes everything people like about the 700 series RoadMates, and adds some extremely cool features.
If you’ve never seen the RoadMate 700 or 760, they’re your standard higher-end portable GPS navigation system, with a built-in 20GB hard drive pre-loaded with maps, high-res WAAS GPS reception (offers up to 3-meter accuracy), and a touch-screen interface. The RoadMates offers both 2D and 3D map modes (plus a turn-by-turn mode) on its 3.8 inch LCD touchscreen, turn-by-turn voice prompts, a ‘repeat’ button to get the last prompt again, huge point-of-interest (POI) database, IrDA ‘beaming’ of addresses to the unit, and multiple ‘profiles’ to support multiple drivers and destinations. They’re also compact, portable units, weighing in at just 13oz
The RoadMate 760 shines with its newest additions. The new “Smart Detour” feature will try to route you around traffic jams on the highways, which is something everyone should love. Also, the new model has text-to-speech capabilities, to ‘read’ you the names of streets for upcoming turns, automatic volume adjustment to increase the volume when travelling at higher speeds, and a new ‘night mode’ system that can auto-adjust brightness and map style based on the time of day.
At $1099 MSRP, it’s pricey – but that’s what you pay for the top GPS nav systems these days. It’s certainly within close range of the competition, and decently priced given the wealth of features and portability. Oh, also in-box is a suction-cup windshield mount, DC vehicle power adapter, AC home power adapter, and USB data cable.
