Teaming the Elgato EyeTV stoftware with Plextor’s ConvertX USB2 video recorder looks like it might make for a real winning combination.
(Windows version shown above.)Elgato is probably one of the leading PVR hardware/software companies on the Mac, but even so they’ve decided this round to tap into Plextor’s powerful ConvertX PVR box from the PC market. And that’s no surprise, given the capabilities already designed and built into the ConvertX box.
The Plextor ConvertX is a USB2.0 Personal Video Reccorder which has an internal, hardware MPEG2 encoder/compressor, so there is very little ‘hit’ on the computer. The ConvertX packs in RCA composite A/V jacks, as well as an S-video jack, for capturing video direct off your favorite source, whether TV, satellite, cable, or even an older camcorder. I believe the Plextor should be able to do realtime encoding into most any MPEG format, as well as direct into DivX formats, at a full 30fps and D1 (720x480) resolution. Pretty incredible.
Elgato’s software provides all the PVR functions on the Mac you’d normally look for, like timeshifting, live video pausing, electronic program guide to pre-set recording times, and exporting/conversion to most any video size and format.
And, because video can be natively stored to MPEG2 format, when you add in that the Mac comes with iDVD, this should make a great solution for capturing video onto DVDs with ease. The Mac ConvertX should be available this month, at an MSRP of $229.99 US. We’ll update our Amazon links to the Mac version when it becomes available…
