Apple has taken the best of the iPod shuffle’s tiny size, and combined it with the full feature set of the iPod, to create the iPod nano. Looks like they’ve replaced the iPod mini with the nano models in the lineup!
In both black and white models, the new iPod nano comes with either 2GB or 4GB of fixed storage, filling the gap between the iPod shuffle and the base iPod minis. It is actually thinner than the shuffle, and only slightly larger at 3.5″ x 1.6″ x 0.27″, and weighs in at a mere 1.5oz (only twice the weight of an iPod shuffle, but one quarter the weight of the ‘full’ iPods). MSRP is $199 for 2GB and $249 for 4GB (no premium price for black!).
In this tiny frame, Apple has managed to fit a miniturized scroll wheel, plus a 1.5″ color LCD display with an LED for the backlight – yes, a color LCD, meaning the nano can display photos just like the full iPods. On the thin top is the hold switch, and the thin bottom has dock connector and a normal stereo headphone jack. In box, Apple ships its earbud headphones, a USB 2.0 cable through which the nano charges (in 3 hours!) and syncs, a CD with iTunes (Mac/Win), and a Dock adapter to keep it compatible with existing accessories (yay! that means your dock, car dock, speakers, etc., should generally work!).
Battery life is rated at around 14 hours of music, 4 hours of slideshows (that’s down from the iPod’s 15 and 5 respectively). Pretty amazing.
Read on for the full press release, or head on over and buy an iPod nano at the Apple Store today! Amazon doesn’t yet have them in stock, but should soon.
