Calvary Church had its beginning on the first Sunday in January 1959. A small group of people began meeting for worship at Lively Elementary School with Bill and Rose Ferrell as founding pastors. One year after the church was begun, the congregation moved to its newly constructed facilities at 1400 W. Grauwyler at North Rogers Road. Bill and Rose Ferrell served the church for 11 years. During their tenure of service the Grauwyler property was purchased and two buildings were erected: an auditorium and an educational building. Ray Wilkerson followed Bill and Rose Ferrell and served the church as pastor for two years.
J. Don George accepted the pastorate of the church on the first Sunday of September 1972, and has served as Senior Pastor since that time. Under his leadership the church has enjoyed significant growth. Four major building projects have been completed. In the fall of 1983 the Grauwyler Road property was sold to Crestview Baptist Church.
New facilities were built at 3000 W. Airport Freeway and were dedicated on April 8, 1985. The Airport Freeway facilities were sold to the Trinity Broadcasting Network in the fall of 2001.
The congregation then purchased 25 acres at Highway 161 and Walnut Hill Lane as plans were made for new construction and relocation. Calvary Church was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest groundbreaking in history on June 2, 2002, with more than 3,000 persons participating.
The Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening of the new Calvary Church facilities occurred on July 4, 2004. Five weekend Worship Services now serve the more than 5,000 persons who make Calvary Church their home church.
