Pope Fails to Placate Abuse Victims

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/16/us/nationalspecial2/16victim.html?ref=us

“We don’t really need his sense of shame,†said Ms. Ianni, who said she was abused by her parish priest in Alexandria Va., from age 9 to 11. “We need him to take firm actions to correct the situation.â€

Well maybe, just maybe, his sense of shame will lead him to take firm actions. If, indeed, he hasn't taken firm actions thus far. Has he not taken firm actions, or has he not taken your definition of firm actions?

David Carney, who says a priest abused him during his freshman year at Catholic Memorial High School in West Roxbury, also dismissed the pope’s comments as insincere.

“Don’t sit around on your plane and talk about it,†said Mr. Carney, 41, who also attended the Boston news conference. “If you’re ashamed about it, do something about it.â€

And who the h*ll are you?

“The pope says he has empathy and that he doesn’t understand how this could happen, and yet he is not willing to talk to actual victims to get our input,†(Peter Isley) said.

Various victims’ organizations requested several months ago that the pope or his representatives meet with them during the papal visit, Mr Isley said, but all such requests were met with silence.

And why should the pope meet with you? Would you really take seriously anything he had to say, or would you just hit the Internet after the meeting was over and say why the Pope's remarks weren't good enough? Seriously, go back and read the remarks of the representatives from victims support groups. Any amount of time the Pope would have spent with any of these groups would have been like casting pearls before swine.

I have very close friends who have suffered greatly because of sexual abuse. Don't even tell me that I have no sympathy, no compassion. I have a lot of compassion for abuse victims. I have no compassion for people who act like whiny little babies who don't get their own way and are never satisfied. A court awards $1 million dollars, they want $2 million. $50 million? They want $51 million. "No amount of money can make up for innocence lost and for the suffering we have experienced" they will cry to the press conferences they convene. But they sure as hell are going to get as much money as they can, even if they have to sue senile priests who committed the abuse 40 years ago.

Enough already.
