A recent study printed in this month’s edition of the American Journal of Public Health (link to article) suggests that racism and discrimination leads to premature delivery and low-birth weight babies among blacks. Mind you, this study was conducted between 1992 and 1995.
Now, I have no problem in admitting that racism does exist in America just like anywhere else; however, I think that we can all agree that it is nowhere near the level it was a few decades ago. Have black women become so weak since the civil rights era that “perceived racial discrimination” as the article describes is enough to endanger the lives of our unborn children?
Let’s face it, much of what we face as blacks here in America that we define as “racism” is nothing more than misunderstandings and misinterpretations. [BEFORE YOU JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS: I did not say, nor am I saying that blacks do not experience racism today. What I am saying is that if you compare life for Blacks in America today with the pre-civil rights era, you will have to honestly agree that racism is much less of a factor for us today].
If you ask just about any black person if they have encountered racism/discrimination, just about all of us will respond “yesâ€ÂÂ. But to link the few legitimate cases or racism to a lower birth rate amongst blacks is just as ridiculous as me saying that there is a legitimate relationship between dumbness and blonds.
It seems that this report fails to consider the more realistic factors such as diet, the stress of being a single mom (if applicable), the relationship between both mother and father, etc. and jumps right to the conclusion that racism is the blame.
It is my opinion that this is nothing more than another example of white liberalism’ attempt to convince us that whites are solely the blame for the ills of slavery. Not only does this put them on the hook, it also empowers them to continue to push for programs that keep blacks at the mercy of their “good gracesâ€ÂÂ.

There is a stronger correlation of low birth weight and pre-natal illegal drug use by the mother. But that statement would not get any ‘good stars’ for the authors.
