Creative Arts Ministry

The Creative Arts ministry of Bethel Church has a great heritage of purposeful ministry and a passion for excellence. We strive to lead our congregation in meaningful worship, effective communication, and creative expression for the glory of God and for the encouragement of our church and community.

To be a growing community of believers who are seeking to reflect the Lord Jesus Christ and fulfill His plan for the church by:

Worshiping God in Spirit and truth
Growing in the wisdom of God's word
Loving one another as Christ loves us
Empowering believers to minister
Sharing God's love with the world

Areas of ministry and involvement...

Voices of Bethel
...is our main sanctuary choir, which is a very important part of our services and productions. Involvement is divided into seasonal commitments. The Winter segment, January through April, includes our Easter production. The Spring segment, May through June, includes our Patriotic Celebration. The Summer segment, July through August, includes regular services, and the Fall segment, September through December, includes our Christmas Spectacular.

Bethel Orchestra & Rhythm Section
...is a vital part of our services and productions. Woodwinds, brass, strings, percussion, and rhythm section players play a wide variety of styles ranging from symphonic and jazz to contemporary pop and rock. Audition required.

Drama Ministry
...is an important part of our services as well as productions. There are opportunities for actors, directors, and script reviewers in addition to positions in the areas of props, sets, carpentry, painting, costumes, sewing, makeup, and decor.

Carillon Bells
...is a fun and unique handbell ensemble that involves creative teamwork and enchanting music. They are a favorite of Bethel's productions, select services, and the community. No previous experience is necessary, just the ability to read music.

Tape/CD Ministry
...makes sermon tapes available to the congregation and to those that are not able to attend services. Opportunities are available for tape/CD duplicators and foyer counter representatives.

Bethel School of Music
Private instruction for children and adults are available for piano, violin, guitar, bass guitar, string bass, drums, percussion, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, song-writing, music theory, and Kindermusik, our award-winning program of weekly classes designed to develop cognitive, physical, social, emotional, language, and creative skills in infants and young children (ages 12 months through age 5 – age specific classes).

Pastor Jon Lugo has been serving as pastor of Creative Arts since 1989. He was born and raised in the Bay Area and earned his piano performance degree from Cal State University Hayward. Jon oversees the programming and content of all services and special productions. He leads worship and conducts the Voices of Bethel sanctuary choir. He has recently been appointed as a member of the National Music Committee of the Assemblies of God. Jon is a keyboardist, arranger, and producer. Along with his writing partner Laurey Berteig, Jon has written numerous single works, a Christmas musical and most recently "An American Requiem" (written in remembrance of the victims of 9/11).

Jon believes in the Creative Arts function to help transform what can appear to be a large and impersonal venue into a welcoming and intimate house of worship. His axiom of ministry is to facilitate corporate worship by allowing the congregation to participate in music that is sensitively chosen, intelligently programmed and well presented.

Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. Rom 12:4-6
