For example, 1910 catcher-manager Jack O'Conner colluded with coach Harry Howell to allow Ty Cobb's American League batting title rival Nap Lajoie five straight bunts down the left baseline, all unanswered by third baseman Red Corriden ordered to hang in shallow right field, so that Nap could overtake Ty's record. The jealousy-induced scandal was widely derided and both O'Conner and Howell were unofficially banned from baseball.

41 years later, new owner Bill Veeck drew some criticism for his quirky attempt at forcing walks from the opposing pitcher. He added a 3' 7" man named Eddie Gaedel to the lineup as a pinch hitter, making the strike zone smaller lower and nearly impossible to identify, which led to four straight walks and the infuriation of American League President Will Harridge.

Veeck later attempted to move the team to their original hometown of Milwaukee but was blocked by other owners within the league for unclear reasons. After an attempt to then move the team to Baltimore, Veeck was again rebuffed and forced to sell the team's Sportsman's Park stadium to rival St. Louis Cardinals and the franchise itself to a group of attorneys.

Under the new ownership, the Os (then the St. Louis Browns) did make the move to Baltimore and took the name Orioles. Today, "The Birds" as they are known by fans call Camden Yards their home and have won three World Series in Maryland.
