TURN AZ BLUE!

Our Mission
- We intend to bring together activists, bloggers, and voters to work toward progressive political change in Arizona.

- By sharing information and keeping each other informed, we can coordinate efforts to promote progressive causes and candidates.

- We hope to provide a forum for local Democratic candidates to present their positions on issues of concern to Arizonans.

- Anyone who shares our goals is welcome to join and contribute.

- The age of open source politics is here. Lobbyists and special interests have run Arizona for too long.

- Let's take back Arizona from the big money special interests and the right-wing crazies!

Who to vote for?

by: Mackinac

Tue Oct 07, 2008 at 02:32:40 AM MDT

I just received my ballot in the mail.  Besides the obvious, Barack Obama, Dan Saban and other Democrats, I'm not sure who or what to vote for.  For some positions a Democrat is not even on the ballot and others are "nonpartisan."  The back of the ballot is insane! A list of about 200 Superior Court judges that that I am supposed to know if they are good enough to be retained or not...are you kidding me? How the heck am I supposed to know? I've never seen a ballot list so many names and simply ask if they all should be retained or not.  This is very, very backwards and downright stupid (not to mention the crazy amount of ballot propositions!).   Anyway, I digress....

I don't know anything about Scott Bales from the Supreme Court.  Is he liberal or conservative?  Should he be retained?  What is your take on the propositions?  Help me out folks, I want to vote for progressives and progressive propositions.  What and who are they?

House Dems Short $14 Million in DCCC Dues

by: randysf

Sat Oct 04, 2008 at 20:37:42 PM MDT

We are now in the final month of the 2008 election campaign. On the House side of the equation, our field of battle is changing with pickup opportunities expanding, not contracting. More and more Republican seats are becoming vulnerable, be the DCCC does not have the funds needed to take full advantage. Making matters worse is the $14 million in dues unpaid by members of Congress to the DCCC, according to the subscription-only Roll Call.

Xena Returns!

by: Zelph

Sat Oct 04, 2008 at 16:59:26 PM MDT

If you've been in Arizona a while the name Debra Brimhall may ring a bell.  Brimhall formerly represented Snowflake as a State Representative and was known for her zany antics and loony legislation.

Brimhall used to like to dress up like Xena the Warrior Princess while campaigning.  She was once pulled over for a traffic violation while thus attired and tried to get out of the ticket by claiming "legislative immunity".  Only trouble ... she was no longer in the legislature at the time.  She was charged with impersonating a legislator (something she should have been charged with while still serving, but I digress).

I learned today that Debra Brimhall Pearson is running for the Maricopa County Community College Governing Board in District #3 and that this person is one and the same as our favorite Xena impersonator from Snowflake.

Do you really want someone on the Governing Board of Maricopa Community Colleges who once favored term limits for teachers?  Does she still?  Perhaps her opponent should ask.  Or would that be petty?

Here's what Tucson Weekly's The Skinny had to say about Brimhall's legislative service:

Speaking of boobs in the Legislature, Rep. Debra Brimhall, the wacked-out Xena lookalike from rural Snowflake, wants to extend term limits even further. In a dopey bill co-sponsored by Randy Graf of Green Valley, the Warrior Lawmaker calls for no more than 12 years of employment for members of the media, lobbyists and state employees. Boy, that'll do a lot of good when it comes to recruiting quality teachers and top-notch university faculty.

It's a good thing there's no important business to focus on, like balancing the budget or anything.

Securing the votes in Congress to pass real immigration solutions into law isn't going to be easy. The next President - no matter who wins - will need to lead his own party first to get it done.

Latest KAET Poll Released

by: Man Eegee

Wed Oct 01, 2008 at 10:23:47 AM MDT

The margin has narrowed between Senators John McCain and Barack Obama for the 2008 Presidential Election in McCain's home state of Arizona.
TEMPE, Ariz. --Republican John McCain maintains a 7-percent lead (45 percent to 38 percent) over Democrat Barack Obama in Arizona, according to a new Cronkite/Eight Poll conducted Sept. 25-28. The statewide poll of 976 registered voters also found that Independent candidate Ralph Nader received 1 percent and Libertarian candidate Bob Barr and Green Party candidate Cynthia McKinney each received less than 1 percent of the vote. Sixteen percent were undecided. Last month, the poll found that McCain led by 10 percent with 40 percent of the vote, while Obama drew 30 percent, Nader drew 2 percent, Barr had 1 percent and 27 percent undecided.

ASU-based Channel 8 and the Walter Kronkite School of Journalism also polled residents on two state ballot initiatives that voters will see on their ballots on November 4th:

The proposal to change the Arizona Constitution to define marriage as between one man and one woman was supported by a narrow margin. Forty-nine percent favored the change, 42 percent were opposed and 9 percent were undecided. The proposed employer sanction proposition was strongly supported by 63 percent of the voters, while 19 percent were opposed and 18 said they were undecided.

Regarding the employer sanctions change, Capitol Media Services reports that State Rep. Russell Pearce characterizes the results as "somewhat alarming" and that "it will undo everything we've done".

Good.

Don't forget that October 6th is the deadline for new voters to register and be eligible to participate in the general election next month.  Please direct them to ServiceArizona.com

The Mother of All Half-Baked Theories!

by: satyr9us

Tue Sep 30, 2008 at 16:59:55 PM MDT

Also posted to MyDD and  Daily Kos

(I'm doing some work with America's Voice-- they've got a thorough run-down at their website.)

As our economy continues to stagger and gasp along with record market failures-- and the failure of our paralytic government to do a single thing about it-- a lot of people are searching for explanations.

Take, for example, Michelle Malkin and Mark Krikorian. Yes, they're searching-- one might even say they are grasping at straws.

Malkin's subtle theory is that the whole thing is a natural consequence of letting too many Mexicans across the border:

The Mother of All Bailouts has many fathers...But there's one giant paternal elephant in the room that has slipped notice: how illegal immigration, crime-enabling banks, and open-borders Bush policies fueled the mortgage crisis.

Yes, I wish I was satirizing poor Michelle-- but her feeble little brain actually did come up with that statement in all apparent seriousness.

Weiers, Quelland Support Green in LD10

by: Zelph

Mon Sep 29, 2008 at 21:31:08 PM MDT

Why would House Speaker Jim Weiers and former State Rep. Doug Quelland help Green Party candidate Margarite Dale get on the ballot to run against them for state representative in District 10?  It couldn't be an attempt to siphon off votes from Democratic incumbent Jackie Thrasher could it?
Both House Speaker Jim Weiers and former Rep. Doug Quelland  contributed seed money to District 10 Green Party candidate Margarite Dale of Glendale, a rival in November's election. Weiers and four other family members, including wife Regina, each gave $5 contributions to Dale. So did Quelland's wife, Donna.

Clean Elections candidates need to collect 220 $5 cash contributions to qualify for public funding. The Weiers and Quelland families helped Dale achieve that goal.

Weiers' spokesman Barrett Marson denied that the contributions were part of a strategy to take voters from the district's Democratic incumbent, Rep. Jackie Thrasher of Glendale.

Well if Republican spokesliar Barrett Marson denies it, I guess it can't be true.

Is Margarite Dale a legitimate candidate or a stalking horse for Weiers and Quelland?

Don't be fooled.  Single-shot Thrasher for state representative if you live in LD 10.  That is, vote for Thrasher and only for Thrasher for state representative in LD 10. There are two seats available and the top two vote getters win. If you vote for Thrasher, as well as Dale, you increase Jackie's chance of losing to one of the Republicans.  Don't do it!

by: Man Eegee

The House web-server seems to be sputtering to life again.  Here's the way things ended up with the Arizona delegation for the Wall Street bailout package.

No - Renzi, Franks, Shadegg, Pastor, Mitchell, Flake, Grijalva & Giffords.
