Ethiopia: Can't eat, won't learn

[image]IRIN   Ethiopia's schools have opened for the new academic year, but severe food insecurity in some regions has kept thousands of children out of class. "This time last year we had already enrolled 2,300 students," said Solomon Desta, director of Bashiro primary school in Bona district of Sidama zone in the Southern region. "Now we have registered 1,800."  Solomon had prepared for 2,500 children because he was forced to send some children to other schools last year as Bashiro could not accommodate them all.Ethiopia's schools have opened for the new academic year, but severe food insecurity in some regions has kept thousands of children out of class. Racist TPLF charts ways to tighten grip on power

[image]The 9th regular conference of the Tigray People’s Liberation , a racist party originally set up to secede Tigray from the rest of Ethiopia,  has deliberated on ways of tightening its grip on power. During the course of the conference, held in Mekele, Meles Zenawi claimed that any serious challenge against the TPLF has been crushed and vitiated. He said that the TPLF would continue to rule the country with more resolve than ever before. The TPLF, which enjoys monopoly on power, owns many bogus ethnic parties, and runs an illegal business empire that enjoys tax exemptions and favoured status, has been in power under the leadership of tyrant Meles Zenawi for the last 17 years.

Addis Voice appoints new chief editor

[image]AV has appointed Lisanu Tesemma as its interim chief editor. While AV's founding editor Abebe Gelaw is away as a Knight International Fellow, as well as Yahoo International Fellow, at Stanford University, California, Lisanu will be in charge of making editorial decisions. "In spite of the fact that running such a website is a demanding job at a critical time when Ethiopians have been denied the right to make their voices heard, I will make utmost efforts not only to sustain the smooth running of AV, but also to improve the quality of contents that appear on the site," Lisanu said. Lisanu can be reached at editor@addisvoice.com.

No regrets over making Ethiopia landlocked
[image]Dictator Meles Zenawi has said that he never regretted to have allowed Eritrea to secede with 1000 km of coastline that has ended Ethiopia’s access to the Red Sea since time immemorial. Answering questions in Tigrigna sent to him by listeners on Dimsti Weyane Tigray, the tyrant claimed that his decision to surrender all of Ethiopia’s coastlines has never affected any development endeavours. Disregarding the fact that foreign ports cost the poor nation over $400 million annually, surpassing hard currency earnings from coffee export, Meles said that there is no correlation between development and the loss of the nation’s ports. He claimed that the country has accelerated economic development in the last four years.
He also told his listeners that the root-cause of the bloody Ethio-Eritrean conflict was political and economic rather than a dispute over tiny villages. [Listen to report]
