Spud State Blog Rundown 8/20/08

In the immortal words of Jean-Paul Sartre, "Au revoir, gopher".

Red State Rebels: Hear some music, help elect Nicole LeFavour
Finally! The temperatures have cooled down here in the Treasure Valley, and we're looking at a run of fine summer evenings just ahead.
The Unequivocal Notion: Lowering the drinking age back in the news
And this time it has some pretty stiff support behind it.
The Political Game: Idaho Falls Today, Home of Hate Speech Yesterday
Yesterday a fellow blogger tipped me off to a train wreck of a thread over at Idaho Falls Today that has had me in a state of teeth-grinding irritation since.
NewWest Boise: Listening to Joe
A young man dear to my heart and young enough to be my son arrived on a hot afternoon in the way young people tend to arrive – in a dusty heap of a car filled with gear and boxes and a bicycle strapped to the roof.
Fort Boise: Whose side are we on?
We saw this movie before, didn't we? Ahmad Chalabi, playing Washington insiders off each other to get what he wanted, eventually dragging us into the Mother of all Quagmires.
Ridenbaugh Press: Severance issues
There might be a good deal more of this sort of thing, not just in Boise but nationally, though Boise’s recent raft of corporate departures my make it a good study . . .
Arbitrary and Capricious: ID: re-entry
A good series of articles about the challenges of being on the outs, by Melissa Davlin of the Twin Falls Times-News:
Eye on Boise: Steep, rugged, heavy forest
U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officer Clint McGuffey, who helped search for the campsite in the Lolo National Forest where Joseph Duncan held two children captive and murdered one, narrated an aerial video tour for jurors of the steep, rugged, heavily forested terrain.

Morialekafa: How nonsensical
A consensus seems to be building that Obama’s pick for VP will be Joe Biden.
IdaBlue: Concert at Western Id Fair not so great
I went to the Western Idaho Fair in Boise last night, and took in the Gary Allan concert. For a while. Not my best concert experience.
The MountainGoat Report: August Means Change
No, I'm not talking about anything political; I'm talking about the changes regular readers should be noticing to this blog.
Rob's Idaho Perspective: Visiting the Mainers
Last year our close friends John and Bonnie moved from Idaho to Maine. John has family in the area and found a good job which instigated their abandoning of Idaho. We have missed them over the year so we decided to head out for a visit.
Left Side of the Moon: A Misfit in Society?
I heard this interview on PBS this morning - Fresh Air - apparently it’s a rerun. Political comedic satirist - Mort Sahl. I don’t know if I’ve known about him and simply forgotten or never knew.
The Royal Northwest Mounted Valise: A Major Discovery at MIT Could Lead to a Process for Storing Solar Energy
While politicians have been debating whether or not to allow offshore drilling for oil, scientists at major research universities are hard at work resolving some of the barriers to alternatives to fossil fuels.
Bill Sali Fan: Congressman Bill Sali getting well-deserved National Attention!
Congressman Bill Sali will always be the Hero of the Owyhees, but as he's moved onto the national stage those of us who have always admired his moral ascendency from close up will have to learn to share him with the rest of the country.
PaleoMedia.org: AEH lost $3.4 million in 2007
Auditor reports that Idaho nuclear energy company future in doubt. Only $324,431 in assets remain for Alternate Energy Holdings, Inc., according to Rotenberg and Co. audit.
Liz Woodruff: Turning Bush Off
Tonight my children and I were spell-bound by the American Olympic gymnysts. We literally were glued to the television, despite the natural beauty surrounding the cabin in McCall we were watching from. Then, HE came on the screen.
Rant Against the Machine: Look Twice
Sweet... I love science.
c4haired wolf: Paris for Prez
I couldn’t resist posting this because I just love the fact that McCain brought her into the mudslinging.

What the ...?

Check out the Official Bannock County Election website here. When you get there, search for "voter registration" or "absentee ballot." What do you see? Look! A link to Jim Risch's campaign website. What's up with that Bannock County?

LaRocco/Rammell CdA Debate liveblog 7:30 PM MDT -- View & participate here

The debate is over, but if you didn't get a chance to watch it live, click the video below to see it in its crunchy-caramally recorded goodness.

The man with POWer

Digby:

Well ok then. The man is incapable of cheating because he was a POW. We shall hear no more about it.

(Of course his first wife and the shareholders in the Lincoln Savings and Loan might disagree, but far be it for me to bring that up.)

LaRocco & Rammell to debate in CdA while Angry Gnome Risch lies cowering in Boise

From Idaho's Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Larry LaRocco:

BOISE, IDAHO — The first debate in Idaho’s U.S. Senate race will take place Monday, Aug. 18, in Coeur d’Alene.

Democratic candidate Larry LaRocco and Independent candidate Rex Rammell will hold a traditional, live debate, with a 21st century twist: this debate will be streamed live over the internet at www.laroccoforsenate.com/debate.

LaRocco and Rammell look forward to debating issues important to Idahoans. North Idaho College Political Science Professor Tony Stewart will moderate. Questions will come mostly from internet viewers.

What: U.S. Senate Debate

When: 7:30 – 8:30 pm MT; 6:30 – 7:30 pm PT, Monday, Aug. 18

Where: Riverstone Room, Hampton Inn & Suites, 1500 Riverstone Drive, Coeur d'Alene, ID.

The wide open Idaho race for the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Larry Craig has drawn national attention. Rammell was recently featured in the Wall Street Journal, and Good Morning America: Weekend Edition will feature the race Sunday, Aug. 17.

When Rammell and LaRocco proposed this series of debates to be held in major cities across Idaho, a spokesman for Republican candidate Jim Risch responded by disparaging this public discourse. Regardless, Risch has also been formally invited to attend Monday’s debate. He has not responded. Risch has also shunned the traditional, statewide, televised Idaho Public Television/League of Women Voters/Idaho Press Club debate.

Its a Chicken and Egg Thing.

"Yes, the paper has been held up by many as a very conservative paper. It serves a conservative audience."--or maybe its a conservative audience because they live in an echo chamber. Without being exposed to reasonable alternative points of view they're devoid of choice. Which lead to exchanges like this, leaving a chilling pall of surprise upon a rational ear.

I commend the Idaho Press Tribune for the courage to ask tough questions of the appropriateness of Bill Sali's conduct between his congressional office and the campaign office and for recognizing that they were engaged in an illuminating but diversionary pissing contest, and took the high road out. Here are a few suggestions for follow up questions they mentioned just in case they haven't gone their yet. Ask some questions regarding Sali's personnel policy and Hoffman's time sheets? Maybe a couple on the real reasons Sali sited his campaign office right next to his congressional office. Very refreshing to have some skepticism with a heavy dose of critical analysis in journalism in Idaho.  read more »

Breaking the Republican Monopoly on Politics

Today mcjoan over at the Daily Kos wrote a fantastic piece about how Democrats are out raising their Republican counterparts.

Specifically, the post highlights how, for the first time in about a decade, the Idaho Democratic Party earned more from the state tax check-off than the Republicans.

Join us in building the momentum that will break the Republican's lock on political discussion here in Idaho. Contribute today!

PRESS RELEASE - Simpson grandstands, rejects bipartisanship

PRESS RELEASE - August 15th, 2008
Debbie Holmes for Congress

Yesterday, Mike Simpson returned to Washington, while the House was not in session, to participate in an act of political grandstanding on the House floor. In a press release, Simpson claims that the Democratic leadership of the House isn't willing to allow a vote on offshore drilling. This is not true. Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House, has stated her willingness and intention to hold a floor vote at the end off the recess to allow offshore drilling with an increase in renewable energy investment.  read more »

The Larry Craig Energy Plan

Republicans have spawned an energy policy media blitz designed to satisfy even the greediest of oil companies, dubbed "drill now, drill everywhere" adopting the now useless slogan that was to be used for Larry Craig's re-election campaign. Big oil is sponsoring Republican convention coverage so they can turn the Republican Party faithful into their dutiful drones, as if they weren't already. They want their juice and they want it now regardless of the damage it causes and the addiction it feeds. Petulant bastards.

Think Progress went national with Bill Sali's trees for oil program making him the heir apparent for bringing more shame to Idaho.

Big ole fat hat tip to the Unequivocal Notion for getting this noticed.

Brainfade Sali's shenanigans convince Idaho Press-Tribune to begin blogging

Idaho wingnut congressclown Bill 'Brainfade' Sali may or may not inspire loyalty, but it's certain he and his cadre of misfit misanthropes inspire loyal opposition:

Welcome to our new blog

By Vickie Holbrook

We've wanted to start up an editors' blog for quite some time, but it's always been pushed to the back burner. Not any more. This is our official launch, and you can thank Wayne Hoffman for that.

When you've got pundits and bloggers, locally and nationally, bantering about your paper, and you've got a seasoned public relations person who cries "libel," it's time to speak up. That post is coming up shortly.

To read the Idaho Press-Tribune's first blog post, titled "Wayne Hoffman: The man behind today's launch", click here. It's got lots o' quotes from the Gem State's blue blogosphere on Sali's FEC filing kerfuffle.

Tilt of the chapeau to Randy Stapilus at Ridenbaugh Press.

LaRocco living La Vida Liveblog: live online town hall Thursday 8/14/08

From Idaho's Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Larry LaRocco:

BOISE, IDAHO— Join U.S. Senate candidate Larry LaRocco on Thursday for his third live, online, video town hall. LaRocco has set the stage as the most accessible candidate in the Idaho U.S. Senate race by embracing technology and connecting with voters any way he can.

Join in the online discussion! Members of the media are invited to come watch this historic event play out in person. Why historic? This is Idaho’s third video town hall—ever. This is the future of communication and it’s happening now!

What: LaRocco’s Third Live, Online, Video Town Hall

When: 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. M.T.; and Noon to 1 p.m., PT; Thursday, August 14

Where: http://laroccoforsenate.com/townhall

LaRocco embraces technology by reaching out to voters through live blogging, online town hall meetings, Facebook and MySpace. He wants to answer questions from citizens in real time –- without a third party filter.

His opponent, Jim Risch, doesn’t care for modern forms of communication. He is running an arms length campaign, and still out of touch. As the Idaho Statesman said, “GOP Lt. Gov. Jim Risch is a dinosaur who writes by hand and uses dictation, doesn’t use email, and pays no mind to blogs or online news.â€

Sali's Shell Game

Recently the Idaho Press Tribune questioned the ethics of Congressman Bill Sali and his reelection campaign. The editorial board stated "the dual employ of Hoffman as an official spokesman for Sali's congressional office and his campaign spokesman is unusual and inappropriate. Hoffman says he can keep his job separate by using different phones and stepping out of the congressman's office to deal with campaign related calls." They quite properly labeled this a "shell game."  read more »

Broken Man, Broken System

A immigrant trying to straighten out his immigration status with the Department of UberHomeland Security died while in custody of US officials:

He was 17 when he came to New York from Hong Kong in 1992 with his parents and younger sister, eyeing the skyline like any newcomer. Fifteen years later, Hiu Lui Ng was a New Yorker: a computer engineer with a job in the Empire State Building, a house in Queens, a wife who is a United States citizen and two American-born sons.

But when Mr. Ng, who had overstayed a visa years earlier, went to immigration headquarters in Manhattan last summer for his final interview for a green card, he was swept into immigration detention and shuttled through jails and detention centers in three New England states.

In April, Mr. Ng began complaining of excruciating back pain. By mid-July, he could no longer walk or stand. And last Wednesday, two days after his 34th birthday, he died in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in a Rhode Island hospital, his spine fractured and his body riddled with cancer that had gone undiagnosed and untreated for months.

These are crimes against humanity, human rights are being trampled and the faceless thousands that are trying to get through immigration, legally. We need accountability back in our system, a nonpartisan DOJ would begin that change. So is this another criminalless crime, Mr. Mukasey? No one doing their job with the Federal Government is to be held accountable for their crimes. Maybe they'll just be embarrassed by today's DOJ while another family is devastated. Congratulations, America!  read more »

The only problem with this video? I'm not sure this is a real McCain ad. If it is, then he needs to fire the people that made it just because the production is so bad.

He's yer Huckleberry: LaRocco interviewed at HBO today @ 10:30 PDT/11:30 MDT

Idaho's Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Larry LaRocco will be at the Spokesman-Review's blog Huckleberries Online this morning beginning at 10:30 Pacific Time, 11:30 A.M. Mountain Time.

HBO blogwrangler Dave Oliveria isn't sure if there will be time for outside questions, but tune in and give it a shot.

Idaho Pride

As Bush sets out to do as much damage as possible in his last remaining lame duck months, our own Idaho moron has teamed up with him:

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration on Monday said it plans to let federal agencies decide for themselves whether highways, dams, mines and other construction projects might harm endangered animals and plants.

The proposal, which does not require the approval of Congress, would reduce the mandatory, independent reviews that government scientists have been performing for 35 years. Developers welcomed the plan, while environmentalists derided it.

Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne said late Monday the changes were needed to ensure that the Endangered Species Act would not be used as a “back door†to regulate the gases blamed for global warming. In May, the polar bear became the first species declared as threatened because of climate change. Warming temperatures are expected to melt the sea ice the bear depends on for survival.

Thanks a lot, Dirk. You've once again made Idaho look worse.

I'm pretty sure those two blundering fools have no idea what they have done. What repercussions this will cause will be a matter of time to determine, but I believe they'll be drastic and unfortunate.

Desperate Rethuglican Party attacks vs. LaRocco's priorities for Idaho

Last Friday, Idaho Rethuglican Party chairmoron Norm Semanko and his guano-gargling lickspittle Sid Smith used former presidential candidate John Edwards' admission of an affair in 2006 to attack U.S. Senate candidate Larry LaRocco.

It's almost certain that Jim "Angry Gnome" Risch is behind the ham-handed GOP attack on LaRocco. It appears that The Gnome and Scumanko -- terrified that Risch's flaccid poll numbers will only continue to deflate -- went into panic mode and began wildly spraying sewage in the vain hope of knocking the LaRocco campaign down to the Idaho Rethug's level.

It's becoming painfully obvious (painful to the Idaho GOP, anyway) that Angry Gnome Risch has lost control of his campaign, if he ever had control of it to begin with. It wouldn't surprise me at all to learn that the National Republican Senatorial Committee sent down their goon squad to force Scumanko and the Gnome to try to shank the LaRocco campaign before it becomes any stronger. If that happens to be the case, then Angry Gnome Risch's campaign is in trouble. Which may also explain why Risch refuses to engage in retail politics and talk to voters, and still has no policies published on his website. In short (ahem), he's got nuthin'.

Now that we've seen the Idaho GOP flailing wildly in the dirt, what slimy shenanigans do they have next to pull out of their snot-encrusted sleeves? If I had to make a prognostication, I'd venture to guess they're ginning up a vicious attack against Angry Gnome Risch's nemesis -- pseudo-Independent Senate candidate Rex Rammell. Watch for it, folks -- it's coming sooner than you think.

LaRocco, however, understands the old adage that a wise man never wrestles with a (GOP) pig -- you both get filthy, and only the pig enjoys it.  read more »
