IS WITCHCRAFT CRAFTY?
A book series and a Hollywood film centered on a character called Harry Potter has become very popular. There are many who say the books and film are entertaining and stimulating for both young and the old. Others suggest Harry Potter and the sorcery he promotes, introduces people to witchcraft. So what is true? Is Harry Potter harmless or is witchcraft, crafty?
……………………………………………………
“Potter prompts course in witchcraft,” [1] the headlines stated. I was not really surprised. It would only be a matter of time before something like this happened, I thought. But then I read further. The article stated: “A growing interest in sorcery and witchcraft generated by Harry Potter stories has prompted an Australian university to launch a special course open to the public. The 12-week course at Adelaide will explore the witchdoctors of Africa, shamans from the Amazon and Zambezi valleys, witches from the 16th century and others who practice magic rituals.” [2]
So what is going on? A review of history will reveal that people around the world have always been fascinated with witchcraft and the powers of sorcery. But why is this so? The answer is simple. The fallen spirit realm under the leadership of Satan, have an agenda. The goal is to lead mankind away from God and his word. While pagans are easy targets, Christians can be affected too.
It should be quite obvious that J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter’s successful creator, is not the first person to grasp the idea that people are fascinated with the powers of darkness. History reveals that mankind can be easily led. Archaeology bears the evidence. Witchcraft and the occult open the door to the gods and it has been very effective.
But now, universities are getting into the act. These higher centers of learning boast of their ability to be able to equip people to think freely and scientifically about the world and all things in it. Of course, science is heralded as the field of knowledge where highly trained and sophisticated intellectuals analyze all things critically and analytically. Observations are made and repeated experiments are performed. If you want to know the truth many claim, you must be scientific.
While some may be shocked that Harry Potter and the “sorcerers stone” would inspire a course at a university, I am not the least bit surprised. In fact, courses that introduce students to witchcraft and sorcery can be found at almost any university, and in any course. If you do not agree, take some time and check it out for your self.
We live in an era when science and religion have joined hands. The “new biology,” the “new physics,” and the “new psychology” suggest the world is presently experiencing a paradigm shift. Or another way of stating this – what once was considered as the “powers of darkness,” is now being touted by a new breed of intellectuals as, “the light.”
So, does Harry Potter represent fantasy, fun and frivolity? Is it possible witchcraft can be repackaged for the third millennium and be considered cute? I would suggest we seriously consider God’s perspective of witchcraft. It’s an abomination. It leads people to hell. It’s evil. And remember, the author of witchcraft is Satan. The Bible states the serpent is very crafty?
