Save our Starbucks!

The list came out from Starbucks of stores they plan to close, and Galesburg was on that list. I think this is really unfortunate and not really fair because this Starbucks has not even been open for a year yet, and the first 5 months that it was open, the management of the store was pretty bad. Since the change in December, the place is run much better and I, for one, have gone back much more frequently. Many that I have talked to are just now warming up to Starbucks because when they first tried it, it was run so badly that they did not return. I have to confess that my first two visits to the store were bad enough that I did not return for almost 6 months. It took word of mouth advertisement from others to convince me to go back. Since then, I am a regular, having all but forsaken my previous coffee hangout. (Which if you know me, that is saying a lot!)

One thing I love about Starbucks is that they stay open late, where "the other place" changed their hours some time back and they are not open in the evening at all. (Bad move Mike and Johon!)

There is an online petition that you can sign if you'd like to try to help save our Starbucks. Will they listen? Who knows... but I do know that if we sit down and keep our mouths shut, Starbucks will be gone in just a short time.

If you want to sign the petition, here is the link: Save Our Starbucks

Following the Map is Not Enough

This morning a storm passed through Galesburg which cooled the temperature and reduced the humidity greatly. I had some time before I needed to run my daughter to work, so I just stayed in bed and turned on the television for a bit. When I turned it on there was a TV evangelist talking about how that the Holy Spirit was speaking to 1000 people right at that time to give some amount of money. (I really did not pay attention to the amount.) What got my attention was this guy saying, "The Holy Spirit is speaking to you to do what I tell you to do." Let me see if I get this... the Holy Spirit is speaking to these people, but then He has to speak to this evangelist to tell him to tell those that He is speaking to already to listen to what the evangelist is saying. Uh, I may be a bit slow, but if the Holy Spirit is already talking to these people, then why did he need to speak to the evangelist to tell him to tell them to do what the evangelist says? Something is amuck here, don't you think? This got the wheels turning and I began to think about how many people fall for stuff like this and follow people blindly. Turn on your TV set for a bit and give a listen to some of these shysters. There is a guy who calls himself "Master Prophet Jordan" who is prostituting the Gospel by selling his services as prophet. Depending how much you are willing to pay, the more he will reveal what god is saying to you. There is Don Stewart who will send you the magical "Green Prosperity Prayer Cloth" with instructions on how to use it, which of course includes sending in your offering; and the more you give, the more you are gonna get. There are countless others... but you get the idea. These men are dangerous. These guys are intentionally leading others astray and making a mockery of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

As I was thinking about all this, I realized how many people actually believe in and follow these guys and would most likely defend them very strongly. For example; I've had countless people call or email me to defend Todd Bentley in Florida. Which made me think that you have got to be careful who you follow... when this thought popped into my head. (I'm finally getting around to the Map reference made above.)

Pictured at the top right of this blog entry is a street map of Galesburg, Illinois. It does not list all of our streets, but using this map, I believe someone who had never been to the Burg before could pretty well find themselves around the town with no problem. It is a pretty decent map which lays out the main streets, so it is a good map for someone who needs to get around Galesburg. But what if I handed you this map as you were trying to find your way around Peoria? Even though this is a good map, it is not going to help you get where you are going. Same thing in the spirit realm.
It does not matter how good your attitude is, or how positive your confession is, or how excited you are in your spirit, you are going to stay lost, because you are using the wrong map. Once you have the right map, you can use your positive attitude, positive confession and positive spirit to move you in the right direction for your life. The Bible provides that right direction, but even still, it must be read right. You cannot look at the south side of a map of Peoria to help you navigate the north-west part of town. In other words, we have to use the Word in the proper context. This is where all these false teachers and shysters lead people astray. They hold up the Bible, say the Name of Jesus... weak, gullible people think they must be right because they used the Word of God and spoke the Name of Jesus, but they are shallow enough in their walk that they do not realize that they are being led astray.

Everyone needs to follow the map... but following "the map" is not enough... you have to make sure you are following the correct map and learn to read it yourself instead of depending on someone else to read it for you.

I'm Coming Back... I Promise!

I've taken a little break from blogging lately and I'm about geared up and ready to go at it again and plan to start in a day or two. I appreciate all those who still check in here every day, even though I've not really blogged in weeks. Thanks for continuing to come back!

Before I start at it again, I wanted to take a couple of my old blog entries and re-visit them. Tonight I was scanning through some of them and this one below just jumped out at me.
Hope it speaks to you too.

Our God Reigns (?)

"Our God Reigns!"
Powerful statement. We sing about it all the time in various songs. We wear it on T-shirts.We say it to one another in religious ceremonies and services and it brings us much comfort and peace to say and to hear, "Our God reigns!"

But, as I have been sitting here this morning pondering that statement, I have found myself wondering; "Does our God really reign?"
No, I've not flipped my lid. Hear me out.

Let me begin with giving you the definition of "reign" from Dictionary.com
Royal rule or authority; sovereignty Dominating power or influence To possess or exercise sovereign power or authority To hold the position and name of sovereign without exercising the ruling power. To have control, rule, or influence of any kind.
OK, I am going to assume we all understand that definition. But here is the question, as I have pondered it:
Are we allowing God to reign in our lives?

The reality is that God has give to each of us free will and choice. Part of that free will is whether or not we will submit ourselves to his authority and will... or, his reign.
God has the ultimate power, authority and sovereignty, yet he allows us to make our own choice. For us to proclaim "our God reigns" is nothing short of a lie if we are not yielding our will, our desire and our passions to him. Many proclaim that they have, yet their actions speak volumes louder than their words.

"Our God reigns".... "but my family comes first. God understands."

"Our God reigns".... "but I can't pay my tithe this month because I have so many Christmas gifts to buy. But I'll pay them next month."

"Our God reigns"... "but I can't give to missions or to help a struggling widow, I have a big party coming up and there just is not enough money to go around."

"Our God reigns"
... but I can't make it to church again this week, there is just too much to do."

And the list can go on and on.
We SAY that our God reigns but the reality for the vast majority is that he does not because our will, our desires, our wants, our plans ALWAYS supersede His, and folks, that is not reigning, that is making Him our idol that we can take out to worship or put away again at any time we choose! Truthfully, many people treat God more like a pet than they do as the supreme power and authority of the universe. We get him out when we need comfort, when we want to snuggle up to him or when we need protection, but we stick him away in a cage the rest of the time. Once a week (or less) we get him out and love on him and sing to and about him, but then he goes back in the cage until next week.

I think I have said enough.
But let me leave you with this question. Does God "reign" in your life?

Good Bye Bozo!

One of the worst parts of getting older is watching those people that I loved to watch as a kid die.
Another one of those folks is gone.
Larry Harmon who played Bozo the Clown for over 50 years died yesterday. While he was not the original Bozo, he is responsible for making the character so widely known for licensing the character to others, including Bob Bell who many of us grew up watching as Bozo on WGN out of Chicago. So, while it was really Bob Bell that I "knew" and loved as a kid, it would have never happened without the dream and vision of Larry Harmon.

Good bye Bozo!

Read the Fine Print America

Did you see the headlines today? Barack Obama announced that he will not only embrace the Faith Based Programs, but he will expand them. The story on the Fox News website says:

Reaching out to evangelical voters, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is announcing plans to expand President Bush’s program steering federal social service dollars to religious groups and — in a move sure to cause controversy — support some ability to hire and fire based on faith.

Obama was unveiling his approach to getting religious charities more involved in government anti-poverty programs during a tour and remarks Tuesday in Zanesville, Ohio, at Eastside Community Ministry, which provides food, clothes, youth ministry and other services.

“The challenges we face today … are simply too big for government to solve alone,” Obama was to say, according to a prepared text of his remarks obtained by The Associated Press. “We need all hands on deck.”

Sounds wonderful, doesn't it? Obama is trying hard to woo the vote of the Evangelical Christians, and in essence, his announcement sounds good and for many the dollar signs in their eyes will be all it takes to garner their vote and for them to sway those in their churches to vote for Obama.

But there is a catch folks. Read the small print and read between the lines. If you read this entire news story, near the bottom it is briefly mentioned, but you have to put on your thinking caps to really get it. What he says in a nutshell is this: If you receive the government money for these faith based programs, then you cannot discriminate in hiring.

Hey, no one wants to discriminate, right?

Think again. What he is saying is that if Harvest Church of God (my church) applies for and receives government money to open a center to work with youth in our community, then we must not practice discrimination in our hiring of staff. That means if a Muslim, a Satan worshiper or a homosexual applies for a job, then I cannot use that information as a reason not to hire them. That is bad enough, but we all know it goes deeper than that. American "anti-discrimination" laws always work backwards.

Allow me to illustrate what I mean:

Some years ago it was announced that they would be building a series of new locks and dams on the Mississippi River, and they were doing some hiring. I had worked at a steel mill for several years and was well qualified with equipment that would be used in this project. I was laid off from the steel mill so a couple of friends and I went down to apply. They were going to hire a little over 200 people for the local job. Over 1500 showed up to apply. We had to stand in line out in the freezing cold for hours, then they allowed us inside where we filled out an application that was like 5 pages. (Government job, you know.) Then they took us in and showed us a film about the job, then we had to listen to 3 different people speak. After 9 hours of being there, the last speaker finally told us how the hiring procedure would be done. He began to tell us all about affirmative action and the guidelines they must follow in hiring. I don't recall the exact numbers used except for how it effected me. Basically it was something like this:

For every 100 people hired X% must be Hispanic men, X% must be Hispanic women, X% must be black men, X% must be black women, and on it went until we told that only 5% of the positions were available for white men. The place erupted. Out of that entire auditorium of people, there was only about 35 people there who were NOT white men. The man called them up front and they were hired on the spot, simply because they were women or a certain color. Did not matter if they had no experience or that there were many of us very well qualified, they BY LAW could only hire a maximum of 10 white men. Period. They had to repeat this process of bringing people in 5 times to get enough people to meet the requirements for hiring the correct percentages of each "minority" employees.

I don't know if those kind of restrictions are still in place as this was back in 1980 and the laws may have changed, but my point is still the same. If a church has an opening for employees in one of these "Faith Based" programs and a homosexual, or Muslim wants that job, you had best believe there will be lawsuits filed for discrimination.

What Obama is doing is dangling the carrot of huge amounts of money out in front of the Christian church to fund these programs, but the reality is it will open the door where churches will be forced to hire employees that are opposed to our Christian values. I just hope the Christians are smart enough to see through this!

Unclaimed Treasures

I was talking to a friend today who was sharing with me some of the financial pressures his family was under. He made a comment that while it was almost more than his family can handle he knew that others wasted more than his need on foolish things. He mentioned how he knew some people that went to a $10,000 a plate dinner a few months ago. He remarked about how the $20,000 that they spent for this dinner/contribution would nearly be enough to erase his medical bills. Then he said something that got me thinking. He asked me if I had any idea how much money was unclaimed by winners of the Illinois Lottery every year. I had no idea. I cannot imagine winning that kind of money and not claiming it immediately! He said, that it amounts to nearly $10,000,000 each year that goes unclaimed. He said, "Can you imagine having millions and not knowing it?"

After we finished that phone call, I kept thinking over that question he asked. Then I thought about how there are so many who have far greater riches than this that they do not realize they have, that they fail to claim. God's Word is filled with promises and blessings that belong to the believer (follower) in Christ. There are so many who have failed to recognize that they are a child of the King and they are living so far beneath their privileges. I'm not one of these "name it and claim it" type people, yet I recognize that we have so many blessings, so much protection, so much authority that is ours because we are joint heirs with Jesus, yet most never claim those blessings or operate in that authority.

Child of God, recognize who you are and begin to claim those unclaimed treasures!

Response to Lakeland

Someone who uses the pen name "Postmodern Preacher" who frequents a messaging board that I also use wrote the following in response to several conversations about the Lakeland revival and it is such a good thought that I wanted to share it here.

***************************************************************************

(The) Reformation, First and Second Awakenings were Word/Bible focused.
The preaching of the Word was center stage, and the results were worldwide awkenings.

Think of these events ... you think of Luther, Zwingli, Calvin, Wesley, Edwards, Spurgeon, Finney, Moody, Robers, etc. These men were Bible scholars, Bible preachers! We still study their theology today.

When I think of old school Pentecostalism, I think of Daddy Seymour, George Alford, RH Hughes, David Lemons, George Britt, Carl Richardson, EL Terry, George Vorhis, etc. There are no finer Word preachers than these Pentecostal preachers.

But along with the Word preachers, came those who preached and ministered in the gifts (not that the above didn't) such as Smith Wigglesworth, RW Schambach, Lester Summerall, AA Allen, Jack Coe, Aimee McPherson, K Kuhlman, etc.

Then a whole new breed of charismatics arose with many focusing on the experience such as healing, tongues, prosperity and wealth, prophesying over people, etc.

My reflection? When the church focused on the gospel, we had worldwide awakenings. Our influence in the world was powerful.

When the church is focused on experience, we are constantly trying to stir up the emotions. Our influence is negative - we have become a laughing stock in the eyes of the unbeliever.

The latest greatest in Florida? I am sure many are being blessed in spite of the terrible doctrine.

But what will be the long term effects? What will History of Christianity books say about this period of the church's existence?

Another Look at the Lakeland Event

It seems I'm not going to be able to leave this one for awhile. I keep receiving emails and phone calls asking me about it. I have many friends who have fallen into the deception and have made the trek one or more times to be a part of this revival. I have been told about the wonderful praise and worship and how that if you are there you cannot help but feel God's presence. I've had some people tell me how awesome the worship was but that when Todd Bentley got up to speak the atmosphere changed. I've watched a few of the services online and I have to tell you, my spirit does not agree with what is happening there. I've prayed and asked the Lord to show me if I am wrong. But everything I am seeing grieves me.

I keep hearing people make statements like, "take what is good from it" or "eat the meat and spit out the bones." I'm sorry, I cannot agree with that. There is false teaching and things happening that are contrary to God's Word taking place in Lakeland.
Listen people... God does not ever violate or add to His scripture! I believe what we are witnessing is a deception of epic proportions.

There are several reasons why I will say that this event is not of God. (I am uncomfortable calling this a “revival.”)
The first and major reason is that Todd Bentley admits that he has an angel named Emma who appears as a beautiful woman. He has described her as wearing a long flowing dress and says she floats off the ground when she walks. He also claims to have the angel of William Branham and John G. Lake with him. He regularly talks about seeing angels, and having them talk to him, minister to him and even claims that the angels performed surgery on him when he was taken up to heaven.
I want to attest that angels are biblical and without question do exist, there is no Biblical precedent for this type of interaction with them. And nowhere in the Bible can we find female angels. Although, angels are neither male nor female, they without exception appear as men in every biblical example.

And note that in every scriptural case of a human having contact with an angel the angel always says, “Fear Not”. There was a reason for this. In our mortal bodies seeing an angel would startle or cause fear in all of us. The solders who were guarding the tomb of Jesus fainted when they saw the angel.
However Todd Bentley and others like him would have us believe that angels appear to them daily and engage them in normal everyday conversation.

When he describes his being taken up to Heaven, he says that the angels strapped him on a surgical table and that he was terrified. Does this sound like how God would operate?

18 Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you for the prize. Such a person goes into great detail about what he has seen, and his unspiritual mind puffs him up with idle notions.

19 He has lost connection with the Head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.

Colossians 2:18-19

Well, people keep coming back at me with these questions:
What about the healings.
What about all the good stuff?

I have offered this to several people:
When I was in prison, I was surrounded by demon possessed men.
There were people who worshiped Satan.
There were people who worshiped false gods.
You could literally feel the evil around you.
But when 2 or 3 (or more) of those of us who were Christians got together and began to worship the Lord, his presence and glory came down.
Matthew 18:20 "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in their midst."

I submit the same thing is true in Lakeland. True men and women of God are there, worshiping God and He is there. But his presence no more endorses Todd Bentley or the entire event there in Florida than he endorsed the activities taking place in the prison where I was incarcerated.

Don't buy into the "Eat the meat and spit out the bones" stuff. (Read the blog preceding this one about the Parable of the Brownies.
If you study scripture you will see that God is not too thrilled with a “mixture” in our worship... in fact He hates it.

I know you are still not convinced - I mean after all what about the great signs and wonders??
"For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect." (Matthew 24:24)
Remember the magicians were able to replicate almost every miracle that Moses performed before Pharaoh.

Think about it folks.

Matthew 7:22-23
Many will say to me in that day, Lord! Lord! Did we not prophecy in your Name, and through your name throw out demons, and through your Name do many wonderful works? And then I will say to them, I never knew you. Depart from me you workers of iniquity.

Parable of the Brownies

Well, it's been less than 30 minutes since I posted my last blog and already I have had an email and and phone call questioning why I would post this. The email said I should just keep silent if I have nothing good to say. I could write at length a defense for my posting these blogs, but I decided to use a little parable that I have seen, with a slight adjustment to make it fit the current situation of people wanting to watch/listen to these false teachers.
To him who has ear, let him hear.

*********************************************************************************************

Two teenagers asked their father if they could attend the latest and greatest revival that was all the rage. After reading some material about this revival event on the internet, he denied their request.

"Aw dad, why not?" they complained. "It's really great! Everyone is excited about it"
They say the music and worship is just awesome!

Dad replied: "Because that event contains a lot of things that are questionable at best, and possibly outright deception, and I don't want you exposed to that."

"But dad, those are just very small parts of the event! That's what our friends who've been there have told us. The event is hours long each evening and those things that concern you are just a few minutes of the total event!
It's basically truth, and there are so many testimonies of people being blessed and even healed. They say over 20 have been raised from the dead!"

"My answer is 'no,' and that is my final answer. You are welcome to stay home tonight, invite some of your friends over, and worship and pray together. But you will not go to that event. End of discussion."

The two teenagers walked dejectedly into the family room and slumped down on the couch. As they sulked, they were surprised to hear the sounds of their father preparing something in the kitchen. They soon recognized the wonderful aroma of brownies baking in the oven, and one of the teenagers said to the other, "Dad must be feeling guilty, and now he's going to try to make it up to us with some fresh brownies. Maybe we can soften him with lots of praise when he brings them out to us and persuade him to let us go after all."

The teens were not disappointed. Soon their father appeared with a plate of warm brownies which he offered to his kids. They each took one.
Then their father said, "Before you eat, I want to tell you something: I love you both so much."

The teenagers smiled at each other with knowing glances. Dad was softening.

"That is why I've made these brownies with the very best ingredients. I've made them from scratch. Most of the ingredients are even organic. The best organic flour. The best free-range eggs. The best organic sugar. Premium vanilla and the finest chocolate."

The brownies looked mouth-watering, and the teens began to become a little impatient with their dad's long speech.

"But I want to be perfectly honest with you. There is one ingredient I added that is not usually found in brownies. I got that ingredient from our own back yard. But you needn't worry, because I only added the tiniest bit of that ingredient to your brownies. The amount of the portion is practically insignificant. So go ahead, take a bite and let me know what you think."

"Dad, would you mind telling us what that mystery ingredient is before we eat?"

"Why? The portion I added was so small. Just a teaspoonful. You won't even taste it."
"Come on, dad, just tell us what that ingredient is."

"Don't worry! It is organic, just like the other ingredients."

"Dad!"

"Well, OK, if you insist. That secret ingredient is organic...dog poop."

Both teens instantly dropped their brownies back on the plate and began inspecting their fingers with horror.

"DAD! Why did you do that? You've tortured us by making us smell those brownies cooking for the last half hour, and now you tell us that you added dog poop! We can't eat these brownies!"

"Why not? The amount of dog poop is very small compared to the rest of the ingredients. It won't hurt you. It's been cooked right along with the other ingredients.
You won't even taste it.
It has the same consistency as the brownies. Go ahead and eat!"

"No, Dad...NEVER!"

"And that is the same reason I won't allow you to go to that revival.
You won't tolerate a little dog poop in your brownies, so why should you tolerate a little strange fire in your worship and devotion?
How can you in good conscience partake of something that will introduce adulterated ingredients into your spirit?
Why would you guard what you put into your body more carefully than you guard what you put into your spirit?"

Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough?

Time To Sound Another Alarm!

Folks, I truly believe we are living in the last days. Just take a look around and study the Word of God, it is becoming more and more clear that the last days are upon us. Aside from the violence in the world, the changes in the seasons and weather, the increase in technology and the rapid rise in the cost of living, I am alarmed at the increase of false teaching and doctrine being embraced by the Body of Christ. I could go into a long list of them, and over the next few weeks I will take time to share some of them. I'll go into it more later, but one guy on TV is getting people to call or write in so that he can send a prayer cloth to them. Sounds great, but I knew there was more to it, so I sent for one. The letter I got back gave instructions of what to do and then when it was sent back in with my offering he would then pray over it and release what God had given to him for him to give to me. In other words, he is selling the blessings of God. (More on this guy later)

A friend shared this video with me and I had to get this out there for my friends to see and hear for themselves. Paula White has said numerous things that caused me to shy away from her, but this one is the icing on the cake. Please watch the entire video and listen carefully as she and Huck clearly are twisting the Word of God. Especially listen from about the 2:19 point of the video. They expressly say that "Jesus is NOT the only begotten son of God."
Listen for yourself. This is a perversion of the Word of God.

Now before I get the typical "touch not mine anointed" and don't judge them, responses, the Bible tells us to EXPOSE the false teachers and to mark those that cause division.

I am exposing and marking them! If you choose to follow them and you have read this, you will be without excuse before the Father.
