Making Money on Free Software
http://blogs.wsj.com/ biztech/ 2008/ 07/ 25/ making-money-on-free-software/For all the talk of innovation, most of the software that businesses buy is just a commodity. So why pay premium prices for it? Is business software like air travel? That's the rhetorical question being asked by Jim Whitehurst, CEO of Red Hat, which distributes "open-source" software that's an alternative to Microsoft's Windows operating system and other commercial software. Rather then selling another high-priced alternative, his company differentiates itself through its business model: It gives the software away and makes money by selling technical support and consulting services.
