On June 29- July 3, 2008, SAGU held its first annual Champions Mega Camp for rising High School students. The camp had four tracks of Athletics, Drama, Music and Media. Camp benefits included character building, daily instructional sessions, fun, and friends while getting a glimpse of college life at SAGU.
The purpose of the camp was to develop students' skills in a variety of fields in a Christian atmosphere while giving opportunity for spiritual and team development. Teachers for the sessions included SAGU music faculty Linda Robins, Meredith Jones, Tyrone Block, Amanda Lee, Clement Gibson, Bodie Gilbert, and Nathan Otwell for the music track; Skip Redd, Rodney Amis, and other SAGU Media staff members for the media track; Kenny Fickling and other Dramatic Pause members for the drama track; and SAGU coaches Jesse Godding, Shawn Daniel, Jerry Boone, and Hank Moore for the Athletics track.
According to camper Victoria Guajardo, "The learning experience was absolutely helpful.” MacKenzie Robinson commented, “I loved the classes...and I especially loved the teachers! My other favorite part was the evening rally. I loved how you could get away from the crowd and just worship God."
In the evenings, campers were able to participate in great worship times and receive challenging words from the speakers. Speakers for the evening services included former Globetrotter Melvin Adams, who also did a segment of entertainment with basketball skills, Jaroy Carpenter, Mark Molina and Robert Madu. Campers were led in worship by IGNITE, a SAGU student team led by Silvin Galiza.
"I felt the camp was well structured and presented a wonderful opportunity for high school students to develop their gifts and talents,” said Linda Robins. “The students were delightful and eager to learn. I look forward to further developing the camp for next year." According to the Admissions office, which coordinated the event, “We believe we started off the annual Mega Camp well, with a good foundation to build upon. Students came to learn and be challenged and experience SAGU, and we feel that happened successfully. Student participation and feedback was encouraging and positive, and our staff is eager to plan and promote the next one.”
