Beautiful Women Out Of The Woods

I read this collection of nine stories several years ago, but can barely remember anything about it other than the primary setting was life in Kentucky. I recently came across some notes I made while reading the book and am curious about one particular quote that I had written down.
"Beautiful women make me fear death."
I no longer own the book. Can anyone assist me by providing context for the above quote? I can think of several possible scenarios in which something like this might be stated, but the only detail I have is a note that it was voiced by "a character in Chris Offutt's Out of the Woods
