The Expositors’ Conference- 2008
I had the wonderful occasion to spend a few days with our son Geoff at the Expositors’ Conference in Mobile, AL once again. This was the second Conference, and it’s become our annual father-son outing in the Word of God together…feasting on some of the best preaching on the planet and Southern hospitality that is second to none.
Last year, the Conference featured Steve Lawson and John MacArthur. This year, the featured preachers were Steve Lawson and Lig Duncan. These men clearly hold God’s Word in the esteem to which it is so rightly entitled and their preaching reflects that commitment. No “sermonettes for Christianettes” here. Rather these were solid, challenging and Christ-exalting messages…this year all from the book of Acts. How about six sermons in two days? Yes, it was a feast for the soul, and the fellowship of brothers in Christ was great as always.
One of the highlights was spending three hours together with Steve Lawson and about 10 other brothers at Dr. Lawson’s home Sunday evening over a meal and in open dialog about ministry topics.
If you want to hear well crafted sermons, you can easily accesss all the messages at the Christ Fellowship Baptist Church website, at this link.
The messages focus on the apostolic preaching of the Gospel in Acts. Lig Duncan preached two messages from Acts 10 and Acts 13 which establish very clearly (1) the content of the Gospel and (2) the essential components in the apostolic proclamation of the Gospel as the message is taken to very diverse audiences.
What about so-called contextualization in Acts 17? Lig Duncan puts to rest rather compellingly the notion that the message shifts from audience to audience. Sure, Paul was interrupted in his message in Acts 17, but he was clearly on track to set forth the same essential elements that the apostles proclaimed in each case. If you want details, listen to the opening remarks in the Q&A session with Lig Duncan. As an aside, Lig referenced some carefully developed notes from George Knight at Covenant Seminary on this very point.
I commend this Conference and these messages to you and urge you to download these messages for careful listening.

Women and the MDiv degree
I really don’t know how, but I came across a blog today titled The Master of Divinity. The subheading is This blog will follow my trials and tribulations as I pursue dual Masters degrees at Princeton Theological Seminary.
Now the young lady is unknown to me and looks like a nice enough person. So what I am about to say is no reflection on her as a person.
But I began to wonder…should women be permitted into Master of Divinity programs? What is a MDiv for anyway? The terms are from Read the rest of this entry »
The Law in Preaching
“The trouble with people, who are not seeking for a Savior,
and for salvation, is that they do not understand the nature of sin. It is the peculiar
function of the Law to bring such an understanding to a man’s mind and conscience. That
is why great evangelical preachers 300 years ago in the time of the Puritans, and 200
years ago in the time of Whitefield and others, always engaged in what they called a
preliminary ‘Law work.’†D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
Why some women hate Sarah Palin
From Time.com. Belinda Luscombe has some thoughts.
Some polls are suggesting that after gaining an initial bump, McCain’s campaign is being hobbled by Sarah Palin’s vice-presidential candidacy. The voters who are deserting her fastest, some of whom are even calling on her to withdraw, are mostly women.
Women are weapons-grade haters. Hillary Clinton knows it. Palin knows it too. When women get their hate on, Read the rest of this entry »

Aliens!
A headline in my hometown (Monroeville, Alabama) weekly newspaper reads, : “Drunken alien crashes.”
Of course that got my attention. I mean I’ve heard about aliens and UFOs all my life. But I never thought about them getting drunk. I mean they’re supposed to be a “higher form” than humans. Surely they wouldn’t be getting drunk and flying their spaceships around drunk. Heck that could land them in a south Alabama jail on FWI charges! Can’t you see the State Trooper pulling that guy over?
Well, they have a picture of the crash. Keep reading below to see the crash site where the drunken alien crashed. NOTE: no aliens or anyone else were seriously injured in the crash: Read the rest of this entry »
Matthew 25 Network gets used: The Obama Pro-Life Website
It is bad enough that an organization would use the bible to support their efforts to elect a man with blood on his hands to the presidency of the US. The Matthew 25 Network does just that. Read what The National Journal said in an article September 22,
The race between Barack Obama and John McCain is neck-and-neck in the bellwether state of Ohio, according to the latest polls. But Obama is getting a boost in the state among a traditional Republican voting bloc — evangelical Christians — Read the rest of this entry »
