I just heard on the news of a woman who was brutally raped, and of the ten people who witnessed it no one did anything; not one single witness called the police.
What I think is particularly egregious is that the defense attorney participating in the news report tried to justify the witnesses' inaction.
Maybe all ten of the witnesses who thought enough of the ruckus to open their apartment doors believed it was just a 'domestic disturbance,' she says. (Yeah! She!)
Nevermind that the majority of 'domestic disturbances' involve a male assaulting a woman.
Or, maybe the witnesses believed it was nothing more than a verbal fight, she argued.
But there was blood found on the victim.
According to the news report, this horrific crime went on for 90 minutes.
One witness was caught on a surveillance camera pulling his hood over his head to hide his face from the camera and then walking on by.
How can a person witness another human being being physically and/or psychologically assaulted -- and in this case brutally raped -- and do absolutely nothing? "How dwelleth the love of God in him?" (I John 3:17)
An authentic Christian cannot NOT do something. To love thy neighbor as thyself requires action. The commandment requires Christians to DO justice.
"If ye love me, keep my commandments." Jesus said. "He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father..." (John 14:15 and John 14:21, respectively.)
And again, Jesus said: "If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him." (John 14:23)
Is it fair to say that not one single witness was a Christian?
I've come to believe through my experiences that God allows terrible events like this to happen to convict people of their sin of doing nothing, which sheds light on the truth that they neither love nor know God. For them who "know to do good, but do it not, it is sin." (James 4:17)
