Another Update

I’ve just made some moderately major updates to the Peacock Tail theme. The changes are on the permalink pages. If you click through to a post, you should see immediately that it looks a little different: I’ve made it so that when you’re viewing a permalink, all extraneous elements disappear, drawing attention to the post itself.

In total, the navigation disappears, the sidebar disappears, and the post’s date disappears. As well as that, the post content shifts into the middle. The focus is completely on the post’s content; no other elements (except a link back home, obviously) are left to distract the reader. (I’ve explained the decision to do this in a little more depth here.)

Another notable omission up until now was permalink navigation. So you can now navigate to the next and previous post (if there is one) from permalink pages.

You can download this theme update from here. And, because I don’t expect this change to appeal to everyone, the old version is still available at the usual URL.

Let me know what you think!

Peacock Tail Updated

I’ve just made a small update to Peacock Tail. Clicking the big red date number will now take you to a page listing just that day’s posts. Neat, huh? Download it from the usual URL.

Note that I’ve only made this change on v2 of the theme, and won’t be making any further updates to v1.

Peacock Tail Tumblr Theme

This is the demo of the Peacock Tail Tumblr theme, by Richard Dunlop-Walters. It’s named after the Boards of Canada track of the same name. (I am the guy that made the Dayvan Mini theme, also named after a Boards of Canada track.)

My main aim was that this theme be impressive typographically, and I think I’ve managed that. Outside of that, I just wanted it to be pretty! I also wanted to use some of Tumblr’s new features — as you’ll see, I used the new follower variables to output a list of people you’re following on the right. There are a few other bits that I’ll let you discover yourself.

There are likely to be a few bugs and discrepancies in the theme, so if you find any, please don’t hesitate to e-mail me at richard at dunlop-walters dot net. I’ll thank anyone that finds a problem personally on here. That’s it. Download the theme and enjoy! You might want to follow this tumblelog, as I’ll publish periodic updates here.

Pagination Error Fixed

Fixed a small error in the theme where I mixed the older/newer posts links up. If you’ve updated, edit the source manually or re-download the theme. The URL is the same.

Thanks to Mike Zapata for spotting it.

Peacock Tail v2

I’ve made all the changes outlined in the previous post now. I’ve also moved a few things around — I’ve applied the theme here, if you want to see the changes.

Because it’s quite a big update, and some people might not like the aesthetic changes, I’ve left the old version uploaded, so you can still get to that if you prefer it.

As always, feedback goes to richard at dunlop-walters dot net.

Peacock Tail Updates

I’ve spotted quite a few people using Peacock Tail now, which is great. But I hope they’re following this tumblelog, as I suggested — there’s no way of telling who watches a public channel at the moment, which is what this is — because I’ll be releasing a slightly updated version in a week or so.

The reason I’m waiting so long is I want to catch as many of the bugs as possible before updating, to avoid having to update the theme multiple times. I imagine it would be rather annoying to have to constantly update your theme.

Here are the things I’ve marked for update so far:

Chat post styling: I’ve botched the margin on those a little. Reblog a chat post to see what I mean. Slight change of text colour in the “Following” box. It’s a little too high-contrast at the moment, I think. Quote post styling: It’s a little rubbish at the moment. I like the way Ben Kraal has modified them, so I might make them look like that. Pagination link: Rather than next/previous, I’m going to change it to older/newer. The default next/previous is a little confusing. Links in the description: They’re currently unstyled, and I’ve noticed some people like having links there, so that needs changing.

Spotted anything else, or got any other feedback? E-mail goes to richard at dunlop-walters dot net.
