5.8 Earthquake…
April 27, 2008 by pamsplace
A lot of shaking in Mexico City!!! But nobody else in our neighborhood ran outside like my family ![]()
Civil protection in Mexico City initially reported it as 6.3 on the Richter. USGS reported it as a 5.8 and centered in Guerrero.  …probably the strongest since last April around this time!

Wow. As you know, the 5.4 we had in Indiana a little over a week ago was strong enough. I always wanted to ‘feel’ one, and that was just strong and long enough.
Are you okay? What about your place? Were there any other reports of damage or injury?
Sharon, thank you for checking. It seems as though the only damage done was to peoples nerves. The quake of 1985 is still not too far removed from many peoples memories.
Our electric went out, but it was hours after the quake, so I don’t think it was connected. They sent up helicopters, Red Cross ambulances and extra police patrols and all seems ok. There doesn’t seem to be damages being reported to buildings either.
Pam, Glad to hear that you’re all well.
It reminds me of the missionary retreat a few years ago when we were in the floor level mtg room when things started rumbling and shaking. Butch got up and said, “now please remain calm and stay in the room”. It was one of those rare occasions I said, “Forget that” and I literally ran up eight floors to get my baby who was with a babysitter in our room. I just kept thinking, “if this high rise is coming down to crush us, at least I want to be holding my baby when it happens.”
I’m glad I can laugh about it now!
Do you remember that?
I can’t remember
But worse, I can’t believe Butch didn’t run out of the room! He hates earthquakes more than most people!
I believe it was in Acapulco, about 6 yrs ago? Maybe Katie was 2…I don’t remember (maybe not exactly baby). anyway, the nat’l supe at that time (yikes, don’t remember his name) was speaking and I think Butch didn’t want to cause much alarm…or interrupt the message in case it was just a slight tremor. Nothing much came of it as far as major earthquake, but I think some missionaries ended up leaving to catch transportation in case it got worse and travel options became scarce.
Wow, i guess it was a rockin’ retreat…
Bad earthquake humor…
