A Closer Look at a Charitable Remainder Unitrust

[image]Although Ferne Snow grew up on a farm, she didn't know how to run one. But when her husband had a stroke, the couple's own farm responsibilities landed squarely in her lap.

"My husband was really good with money." A contracting officer for the government, Stan Snow handled most of his family's financial planning and managed the farm. "He was a very, very smart man," Ferne says.

Out of necessity, Ferne took over the farm business, which, she says, didn't turn out well. So, she and Stan decided to sell, but they had concerns. They knew the capital gains tax would be high, and they both had some health issues and worries of nursing home care. The Snows knew if they received cash from the farm sale, the money might be gone and leave their children without an inheritance.

That's when ORU development officer, Allen Turner, entered the picture and explained the benefits of a Charitable Remainder Unitrust. After hearing the details, Ferne and Stan discussed the unitrust option. Ferne remembers, "We just felt like it was the answer to everything."

By placing the farmland in the unitrust and then selling, the Snows could 1) avoid the capital gains tax and 2) make a sizable gift to ORU. They would receive an income payment throughout their lives and then pass this payment to their children for 15 years.

Moreover, Ferne says she and Stan were relieved to be able to rely on ORU's ethical service. "We were so appreciative that they handled the legal stuff. I'm very thankful that we could trust them."

About 2 years after completing the unitrust, Stan Snow passed away. Ferne believes Turner came into their lives at the right time. Turner says, "She has expressed to me how happy she was that all had been taken care of before Stan went home."

With all the groundwork done, Ferne says she's "secure in her older years" and able to use the quarterly income for those times when she has extra bills.
