Moving Average Crossovers: Technical analysts compare the relationship of multiple moving averages (MA) of stock prices to determine trend and subsequent changes of trend. MA crossovers suggest a new trend is emerging. For instance, a crossover of the 50-day MA above the level of the 200-day MA indicates a change of momentum and that continued buying may follow. A crossover of the 50-day MA below the 200-day MA suggests momentum has swung to the downside. The likelihood of these new trends increases when the crossover comes on heavy volume.
