US Inaugurates New Embassy in Iraq

Under tight security, the United States officially opens a $700 million embassy in Baghdad. It's the largest embassy ever for the United States and, in a sign of the ongoing dangers in Iraq, it's also one of the most heavily fortified in the world.

Female Bomber Kills Dozens in Baghdad

Witnesses say a woman approached the gate of a revered Shiite shrine in Baghdad and blew herself up amid a crowd of Iranian pilgrims. The attack, which left 38 people dead, comes just days after Iraqi forces took the lead on security under a new arrangement with the United States.

US Death Toll in Iraq Drops Dramatically

A CNN tally of Pentagon figures shows that 309 U.S. service members died in Iraq this year -- a significantly lower number than the 906 who died in 2007. American officials say the sharp drop can be attributed to, among other things, the troop surge and the improved performance of Iraqi security forces in the country.

Judge Says 'Shoe' Reporter Was Beaten

An Iraqi judge says a journalist who threw his shoes at President George W. Bush during a news conference was beaten after the incident, and an investigation is underway to find out who is responsible.
