I Support The Power Holiday

Noticed the daily power failures? It turns out that there is a power shortage in Tamilnadu and so the Electricity Board has decided to declare Power Holidays. This means that we get to enjoy a few hours of no electricity every day.

I fully support this decision to cut power every day because we live in an underdeveloped country. We can’t really expect the Government to properly manage our natural resources and generate enough electric power. How can we blame the Electricity Board for being incompetent? They have better things to do than their jobs. Supply of 24 hours electricity is a nice dream but it isn’t realistic.

We just have to accept that sacrifices have to be made in an underdeveloped poor nation such as India. Until then we should ask other countries that are on the same level as us (Nigeria, Sudan, Bangladesh, Ethiopia) for some tips on how to manage our resources properly.

Lol true! It’s because people like Arun think that our county is fine as it is that we don’t develop!

well….am both for and against it…

for:we should atleast learn to respect the nature…..we can derive more from it….wind energy, solar energy,hydro..etc

against:agree with rachel….it is frustrating when there is a power failure

George says:

I actually am completely for it, so long as it is scheduled at 10:00-12:00. Beyond noon it’s just insane.

Installed power supply capacity is pretty stagnant at around 8.6 gigawatts. It’s been that way for the last five-six years, while power usage has been growing steadily and is now past 9 gigawatts.

However, the real problem seems to be that our hydel projects aren’t delivering anywhere near their full capacity. Nuclear power isn’t the solution either, the reactors at Kalpakkam are a small fraction of our power needs. We, unfortunately, need coal. And lots of it.

Vin says:

We need Wave power, dammit! Thats the way. We have such a long coast line and we use it only for dumping bodies and wetting our feet.

Nuclear power? now way. Its too unstable. Chennai will become Chernobyl someday.

I oppose coal too. Too polluting. Rather become a radioactive mutant with machine guns than die of respiratory problems.

Posted on July 23rd, 2008 at 9:36 am

George says:

We need a base load power source because of the vagaries of wind and tidal power. Whether you like it or not, nuclear and coal are here to stay.

Posted on July 23rd, 2008 at 2:03 pm

Aslam says:

Well… its not just about power productions, its about conservation too. Judicious use of power is important.

Nuclear energy can be an intermediate arrangement, but i believe the future is in renewable sources of energy - wind, water, tidal, geo-thermal, solar,bio-mass. Individually they might not be the solution but together they can satisfy a great deal of the requirement. Coal will soon be given the boot….

And another near future possibility is that soon we will be producing our own energy, through the above mentioned sources… use what we produce and share the surplus with others. Which means every house has its own combination of energy producing devices…

Think about it… :)

Rachel and Vivek, I was being sarcastic. You have to be a complete moron (or George) to support power failures of any kind.

George, I don’t give a damn what problems the country has. I pay taxes and I expect 24 hours power supply.

Anusha, people are deluding themselves about how developed India is. This Power Holiday is a kick in the ass for them to wake up.

Binny, together we suffer. However Chennai is hotter.

Vinny, you’ve been playing too much S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Aslan, TL;DR.

George says:

Aslam, I have this feeling we both read the same Slashdot thread recently. That makes us practically brothers.

Marc, you don’t pay income tax yet!

Want to join me in building a power tower?

I suggest harnessing Ragha to rotate the generator turbine in power plants.

Posted on July 23rd, 2008 at 9:25 pm

Vin says:

@Marc

I haven’t played that game. All torrents are dead.

A combination of all renewable sources of energies will do the job.

Nuclear Fusion seems a long way off. US and EU were fighting over the locations to build the infrastructure…

Yup… this thing really sucks!! I cant believe after all these.. they say nuclear deal is the answer…! I wonder where the real brains are flooding to !

@ marc :P
what ever….atleast…they show timing sense here…at sharp 10 am the power is cut and exactly an hour later it is restored…

hats off to them for keeping their time!!!!

Sundar says:

Ideally speaking Aslam here should have said TLDR. Many of your posts (or mine) might qualify for that statement. Instead he takes pains to go read your post and actually volunteer an opinion. And you dismiss him immediately. If I were you I’d be thankful he read my blog, and commented.

Anyway, your bitching about the situation in India is starting to get TB;DR sort of. Why don’t you suggest something as a solution for a change? Well, suggest something more than in a sentence about copying Nigeria or whatever.

Anyway, this idea of power cuts sucks.

George, dad pays tax so all the same. Power tower, haha! What would it do exactly?

Arun, there is no harness big enough, literally or figuratively.

Vinny, email me your address. I’ll courier you a copy. You MUST play the game.

Vivek, I’m keeping my hat on. Punctuality in disrupting and restoring the power supply is hardly the issue here.

Rachel, atleast they are sending me traffic.

Posted on July 24th, 2008 at 8:34 pm

Marc Z says:

Sundar, I challenge you to compose a reply to his comment.

Let the Government hire experts to provide solutions, it’s their job. I don’t get paid to come up with solutions for them.

Besides, they aren’t going to listen to any suggestions. They’ll do whatever gets them the most money on the side.

Posted on July 24th, 2008 at 10:33 pm

Arun says:

How can anyone have faith in these people in governments to improve situations and provide solutions? Did you see that fiasco in the Lok Sabha, three guys pulling wads of currencies? It was like straight out of a Vijayakanth movie.

Posted on July 24th, 2008 at 11:08 pm

Sundar says:

You compose a reply. It’s your blog. I just made a passing observation.

Posted on July 24th, 2008 at 11:37 pm

I rest my case.

Arun, the sad part was that it wasn’t very surprising. We know money is exchanged so might as well put it on TV.

@All : I hate every thing here…. Bastards daily cutting power for one hour in residents, but giving needless power to party meetings and so on…. These people are always famous in doing these type of fucking things… Its very annoying… They are not even keeping the correct timings, cutting the power by morning 11 and putting it back by 12:20 or 12:30… Every thing sucks here….

Posted on July 25th, 2008 at 8:22 am

George says:

So what it does is this, we have all these mirrors, see. And we focus them on this tower, see. And in the tower there’s molten saltpetre, and when it heats up it’s stored in an insulated storage, see. Then we use the heat whenever we want, by making steam with it.

Voila!

Get millions of hamsters and make em run inside those wheels to generate electricity.

Posted on July 25th, 2008 at 9:16 am

Adithya says:

Ragha will steal the power you generate anyway. He even sacrificed a lamb to increase his powers!

Posted on July 25th, 2008 at 12:09 pm

Marc Z says:

That’s true, Ragha’s power stealing potential is unlimited.

Posted on July 25th, 2008 at 1:18 pm

Vin says:

Is there a way to steal the power from him? It will be an endless loop; him stealing, us stealing… and maybe some other form of power could be generated in the process and it could be harnessed?

Posted on July 25th, 2008 at 10:46 pm

Sanchan says:

Tomatoes will power India in the near future, providing Ragha doesn’t steal it all.

Why tomatoes?

Posted on July 26th, 2008 at 8:33 pm

Marc Z says:

Vinny, that’s just… brilliant.

Posted on July 26th, 2008 at 9:05 pm

Why tomatoes?
Because using potatoes didn’t work.

Adithya says:

Good luck stealing from RAGHA!

Hari says:

Ppl, why don’t you all get the best Invertor in the market and survive instead of finding a way to generate power. Anyways In India how much ever the power you generate there will be a power daily or now and then. Nothing will change.

Posted on July 28th, 2008 at 11:44 am

Rachel says:

Hari, no big deal getting worst or as you said best inverter. But maintaining it is bit annoying and costly too. After 3 months you gotta pay a sum of 450 for the maintainance. Then if you use it continuously then after couple of months you gotta change the battery which costs more than 1000.

Better we sit in dark for 1hour and sweat.
