Firefox 2 OSX GUI

This morning I was reading through some stuff over at digg.com and came across this article/discussion posted on the mozilla development google group page regarding the possible new look of Firefox for OS X. I thought it was a pretty good read and one of those "well its about time" kind of things.

Re: Firefox 2 OSX GUI

That second shot is sweeeeeeeet!

I for one would love to see Apple Mail style toolbar buttons used a lot more. A lot of people hated them when Tiger first came out but not me.

If Firefox looked like that second image, I'd be tempted to switch. I hope it stops using it's own buttons, radios and popups though. I can't stand apps that do that. They always look like Windows 95 or some crap like that.

The new look is sexxay.

Looks nice. I'd think about using it if it used OS X's keychain and spellchecker.

Re: Firefox 2 OSX GUI

I like the first pic–Camino is already unified, and it looks great that way.  I also like the Firefox 0.9+ icons because they're pretty easy to distinguish from each other and look worlds more attractive and polished than the Firebird 0.7 icons.  I personally liked the Firefox 0.8 Pinstripe icons the most because they got along nicely with muted ShapeShifter themes, but I can understand the reasoning behind re-designing the icons again.

The combo stop/reload button (second pic) drove me nuts in Safari, so I don't like the idea of it being in Firefox.  I'm one of those people who gets impatient and sometimes clicks on things one time too many, especially if have something really CPU-intensive chugging away in the background that's making everything else lag.  I don't like Mail 2's buttons, so I'm not too keen on that, either.  The tabs look nice, though.

I'm very tempted to make a theme like that second image...

Also you could try this out: http://www.beatnikpad.com/archives/2006 … irefox1501
Supposed to have form widgets like camino, which I haven't used.

Re: Firefox 2 OSX GUI

Yeah I'm using "DeerPark" out right now. It is a rather big performance boost over the default FireFox setup. Check out the official mozilla page for it if ya want it wink

http://www.mozilla.org/projects/deerpar … lpha2.html
*Note this version doesn't have the aqua form elements, but it is the lastest incarnation of the "deerpark" revolution tongue

Re: Firefox 2 OSX GUI

Deer Park's just an alpha of 1.5..
Only difference should be that it may have less memory leaks.
But if it works better for you, at least there's about nothing new in 1.5..

The one I mentained is 1.5.0.1 (so many periods..), Mozilla doesn't allow non-offical releases to be called Firefox or use the logo.

IMO Safari is the best and cleanest looking browser on Mac OS X.

But yeah, it still doesn't feel like an osx app. It's just a skin...

But lacks extension support. If Camino supported FF extensions, and used some of Mac OS X's built-in bells and whistles I'd really think about switching from Safari.

Re: Firefox 2 OSX GUI

i dont understand the free alternate broswer crowd... what makes them better?? I can totally understand using omniweb because it packs in lots of extra features.  But why use any other?  Especially Camino... what does it do that safari cant? neutral

Gecko... Not that I'm saying it's a good thing.  roll

Yep, gecko's the reason, especially since it does a few things better then Webcore, such as svg, png, and dom.

wikipedia has some good articles on it, but the things I mentained above are about the only differences..

Re: Firefox 2 OSX GUI

Alright, I'll bite big_smile For me it mostly isn't the big things, but a lot of little things.

"Out of the box"
-Going to cached pages in Camino 1.0 and Firefox 1.5 is very fast.
-There's separate stop/reload buttons.  This is personal preference: some people like Safari's combo button better, others like the way Camino and other browsers do it.
-More options for dealing with cookies
-A hosts list for completely blocking content from specific websites (without affecting other users).
-If really bad javascript coding in a page threatens to bog down Camino or OS X in general, Camino will pop up a warning and allow you to terminate it.
-The regular Mozilla about:config for advanced preferences.  I don't mess around in it too often, but there are a handful of little things I always toggle through it (like forcing pop-up windows to keep the full toolbar and other controls).
-Keywords for both regular bookmarks and folders
-No RSS, again a matter of personal preference.  I'm pretty happy using Vienna for my RSS feeds, so I usually disable Safari's RSS support anyway.  The current version of Camino is lacking when it comes to handing off feeds to other apps, but that is on the list of new features for the next version.
-It was easier to export bookmarks from Camino than it was from Safari, though it looks like that has changed (I haven't used Safari regularly since 1.x).
-Double-clicking on the tab bar opens up a new tab, and if you accidentally go to close a window with multiple tabs it warns you first.

There's also various CamiTools add-ons for:
-Adding extra search engines to the search bar (which can also be done through the Property List Editor in OS X's Developer Tools)
-A Camino implementation of the FlashBlock extension.
-Access to some popular about:config options (like disabling favicons).

These are added on as preference panes, and I can usually just leave things the way they are when I upgrade to the newest version of Camino.  I haven't noticed any stability problems with them even after I upgrade Camino, and at the most only FlashBlock occasionally stops working (due to Flash being updated, etc.).

And last but not least, the developers are willing to discuss how Camino is coming along on the Mozillazine forums.  There's also some G3 through G5-optimized builds there that are a bit faster than the official version of Camino.
