[image] Google Image Search Adds Photo-Only Option [image] Google Image Search now has an option, available in the "Advanced" options, to return only actual photos on a search, rather than illustrations and logos. A few tests show it isn't perfect, but it does help winnow down results. The Google Operating System points out, however, that Microsoft's own Live image search has a fuller set of search filters. Perform Site Searches with the Google Mobile App

iPhone/iPod touch only: The Google Mobile app has a hidden secret that can save tons of time looking up web pages on your iPhone: an undocumented shortcut that performs Google site searches. Let's say, for example, you want to read our original post on the Google Mobile iPhone app. Just fire up Google Mobile on your iPhone or iPod touch and start typing in Lifehacker until the Lifehacker homepage shows up in the search results. Then just touch and hold down on that result for a second or so, until the selection flashes. You'll notice that the search box now lists lifehacker.com in a small blue box. More »

Search All Craigslist Sites at Once with Google

Wired's How-To Wiki details how to flex your Google-fu to get Craigslist results from every Craigslist domain. In essence, the author does a Google site search of Craigslist.org and excludes pages with the word 'directory' to eliminate directory listings of names and phone numbers. The resulting query looks like:
site:craigslist.org "search terms"
...where "search terms" is replaced by whatever you're looking for. Granted, Craigslist is designed primarily for local buying and selling of items, but if you don't have a Craigslist city near you or you don't mind trying to do some long-distance Craigslisting, this method can help you find good deals across the globe. You can limit your results to newer listings by using this method for filtering Google results by date.

Filter Google Results by Date with a URL Trick

[image] Google can reorder search and news results from the last day, week, a few months, or entire year by adding a small string to the end of the search URL. Just add this string—&as_qdr=d—to the address bar and hit enter. You'll get a custom drop-down box that lets you re-order results based on date. It's great for getting past the same top results you've already looked through, as well as grabbing only the newest links related to gadgets, software, or whatever else you're searching. Sadly it doesn't work on Google Images, but let us know in the comments if it does work on other Google searches.

Make Site-Specific Searches Within Google Search Results

Most of our readers, savvy searchers that they are, likely know all about Google's "site:whatever.com" function, which lets you search for a term inside a specific web site. Now the search engine has made it possible to do this-site-only searches from a search box underneath certain top results (based on, the company says, "metrics that measure how useful the search box is to users"). It might be convenient if you stumble upon a site you didn't know about in your own searching, but it's also an easy way to help your less web-savvy Uncle Bif and Aunt Marge find what they're looking for, rather than explaining the semantics of search to them.

I'm also a fan of 4INFO's SMS flight status check on the way to the airport from my cell phone. How are you going to track your (and your arriving loved ones') flights this holiday season? Give it up in the comments.
