In Memoriam: Randy Pausch

July 25, 2008 |

Rest in peace, wonderful man.

Dr. Randy Pausch popular Professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University died of pancreatic cancer this morning.

The father of three was 47. He was celebrated in his field for co-founding the pioneering Entertainment Technology Center and for creating the innovative educational software tool known as “Alice” - a revolutionary way to teach children computer programming. (A tribute by Carnegie Mellon)

In September 2007, he gave a final lecture to his students at Carnegie Mellon. His ‘Last Lecture‘ made him one of “the world’s 100 most influential people” according to Time Magazine.

The dying man who taught America how to live.

Three of the most inspiring videos we have watched:

Randy Pausch on ABC

Randy Pausch’s LAST LECTURE
Randy Pausch’S TIME MANAGEMENT LECTURE

Randy Pausch spent his last precious months and his depleting energy trying to raise awareness about pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic cancer:
Is the 4th leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S.
75% of patients do not make it past a year. Only 4% make it to 5 years.
It receives the least amount of federal research dollars among all leading cancers.
Gets little public attention.

Shortly before he died, he appealed before Congress advocating more research and funding to fight the disease. Watch it HERE.

“This is a disease where we don’t have too many advocates because they don’t live very long”.

This is heart rending - his last lecture gives so much emphasise on what our own mahabarata and vedas tell us. Do your duty and thats jus life - nothing else is important - things, wealth, name and fame will come and go, its jus our sense of duty and rightousness which will ultimately give us our peace of mind and ultimately is the true purpose of life.

B&J,this is indeed very sad, I had listened to his talks and watched his shows. Courage he had and sprit he held makes him a higher human. May his soul rest in peace.

Thank you for posting this. I watched Randy Pausch’s last lecture with my husband and daughter and it spoke to all of us. I was particularly inspired by the part about brick walls being there to give us a chance to show how much we want something. Thanks too for the information about pancreatic cancer. My dad also died of this devastating disease.

We both saw his last lecture on Youtube just after he died. A was devastated. He understood how important his research was. Through A, I understood.

However, more than his research, I liked and respected him for the man he was. Thanks again.

There was an interview/write up in Reader’s Digest 2/3 months back. It was very emotional.
