Samsung NC10 netbook tested

Yep, I can see the SIM card slot for 3G but I was expecting some major goodies compared to other netbooks..

Samsung has made super work on UMPC battery life, but netbooks doesn't seem to deserve the same engineering quality:

Less than 2 hour battery life with 3 cell battery!

On other fronts it gets high grades for looks and quality...

Touchscreen Eee PC finally coming

Fingers crossed.. multiple fingers..

DigiTimes is reporting that "Asustek Computer is planning to launch touch panel Eee PCs in the first quarter of 2009"

"The company has not yet decided details of the models which will be updated but will reach a decision based on market demand. The company expects to showcase the products during CES 2009, Hu noted."

This is not the first time we are getting this info, but hopefully this time it will be true... last time they were talking about GPS integration too.

I'm also getting rumors about the touchscreeen being a multi touch screen, which seems to be inline with AUO's news about their 8 inch multi touch screens. ( Asus uses AUO's panels )

Let's see what happens.. I'm hoping for a very mobile version with good battery life..

Thanks GottaBeMobile

As it's MLC flash, it's good for storage on Eee PC 901, but too slow for OS use..

Thanks Conics for the sample!

Super Talent to make SSDs for Eee PCs too

More the better..

At first I got exited a bit as Super Talent has some fast SSDs, but after a bit reading I noticed that these PCIE SSDs are using the same controllers and flash chips as MDD and Buffalo..
.. so the performance is the same.

MLC versions are good for storage and SLC for OS use..

Starting at $53, available after November..

Tom's Hardware got to play with it and come out pretty pleased...

1.33 Atom with Polsbo is not my favorite with Vista but with XP it would be fine..

It should be soon available in Germany for 799 euros.

How-to: 3G HSDPA to Gigabyte M912

Yes, my plan is to 3G enable all mobile computers..

M912 has Express Card slot so you could use external card.. but it sticks out quite a bit.

The good news is that there is a slot for internal 3G modem.. but Gigabyte has disabled it.

After a bit of testing and research, we found out that taping the pin 20 on the modem enables the radio.

Novatel 3G card with SIM slot inside M219.. and working!

But there was still a problem. Now you could use the 3G but it was always on, which is a problem on flights and for battery life.

So we needed a on/off switch. If you solder wires and on/off switch to these pins, you can control the modem...

..but then a better idea hit us:

as you can control the wifi module from software and keyboard, why not tape the wifi modules pin 20, use it on the 3G slot and put the 3G card to wifi cards slot...

then use keyboard shortcut to enable/disable the 3G and wifi software to control the wifi... tested and working fine!

( if you dont want to tape the pin 20 and don't mind loosing varranty, you can cut the line between the solder points, like on the pcb picture )

Igor, the owner of this M912, is using the second wifi antenna on the 3G card and everything is working gooood...

Thanks again Igor, it was fun to remotely mod your computer ;) !
