Would Offshore Drilling Bring Gas Prices Down? — by Catherine Morgan

This will be part one in a series of posts I will be doing on gas prices and offshore drilling. I want to take a look at the facts, and attempt to separate the truth from the fiction. Would offshore drilling lower gas prices? Why do the oil companies need more places to drill, if they aren’t even using all of what they have now? How would more offshore drilling effect the environment? Does this have more to do with politics than the people? These are just a few of the many question we will try to answer here.
Let’s start with an article in today’s New York Times. Here are a few excepts from that article, I really recommend you read the full piece.

1. not only would offshore drilling lower the price of gas, just the mere rumor of congress allowing for offshore drilling will lower gas prices.
2. not every acre of land contains oil. oil companies hire geolgists that do studies and come up with a “guess” on whether or not a chunk of land has oil. after the geologist give a “thumbs-up” oil companies then hire exploratory drilling companies such as: transocean, diamond, scorpion, atwood, pride, etc. these exploratory companies then start the initial wells which may or may not produce oil. if they do find a winner the oil company will then hire a production company to come in and extract the oil. to answer your question though - oil companies are seeking new leases because the leases they currently have either do not have oil or they have oil but it’s not cost effective to extract. (you have to understand wells… when they drill it’s actually the pressure at which the oil and gas are stuck underground that propels it out of the hole. once the bulk of the oil and gas is out the pressure is gone. then the driller can try to shoot a chemical into the well, like barite, that is denser than the oil to push more oil out but after a certain point it gets too expensive so they cap the well).
3. first off offshore drilling is not something permanent. drilling units can be on location from periods of a month to a couple of years. after that most of the oil has been extracted. i’m not going to lie and write that i know all the enviormental effects but i can tell you one thing. if you ever take a deep sea fishing trip the guides ALWAYS take you around the oil rigs because there are ALWAYS fish around them.
4. politics more than people… hmmm i guess we’ll find out in november.
5. read the wall street journal… the ny times WAS a great paper now it’s just communist garbage.

No. Only the end of speculative futures markets and greed would bring down the price in any commodity market.

Some questions for you…
1.) How is drilling going to affect the continental plates and their movements? a possible quickening of EARTHQUAKES?
2.) When you remove the oil what fills in that void?
3.) How will the Mantle’s temperatures affect storage of those
materials used?
4.) How much MERCURY
