A new poll by the Associated Press reveals how important healthcare and the economy are to voters.
Issues rated as “extremely important†in November, and now.
Health care: 48 percent then, 53 percent now.
The economy: 46 percent then, 52 percent now.
Social Security: 42 percent then, 48 percent now.
Gas prices: 47 percent then, 48 percent now.
Situation in Iraq: 45 percent then, 46 percent now.
Terrorism: 44 percent then, 45 percent now.
Political corruption: 39 percent then, 44 percent now.

Waking up to the news of Benazir Bhutto’s assassination today was very sad, but not terribly surprising. I don’t mean that to sound disrespectful in any way…But anyone who had been following the situation in Pakistan over the last several weeks knew that her situation was quite volatile, even her personal interviews were revealing the possibility of this outcome.

The CIA Videotape Controversy

There seems to be no question of whether or not CIA videotapes were destroyed. However, there are many other questions. What was on these tapes? Was what was on these tapes illegal? Who authorized these tapes to be destroyed? Was the destruction of these tapes violating any existing laws? Just to name a few.
But, I think the deeper issue for the American people is trust. Can we trust the administration to tell us the truth? Were these tapes destroyed for the purpose of deceiving us on the “torture†issue? Is there now an attempt to “cover up†who knew what and when? Will we ever know the truth? Well, not today.

On one day the Bush administration attempted to look like they are serious about environmental issues, and then the next day they pull the rug out from under an important emission policy that would have allowed 17 states the right to set their own standards for carbon dioxide emissions from automobiles. Energy Bill: A Christmas Present For The Environment

Finally, some good news! The now signed Energy Bill will require an increase in fuel-economy standards, reduce U.S. dependence on oil, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and totally phase-out the inefficient 10-watt incandescent bulb by 2012.

Your Civil Liberties Are On The Line - Is that o.k. to you???

Late Monday the Senate decided to delay a vote on a bill that would have given the telecom industry immunity for providing private customer information to the government. However, this is just one part of a much more complicated and troubling bill. It’s actually a new government eavesdropping bill that has more than a dozen amendments. This new surveillance bill is meant to replace a temporary law that Congress hastily passed back in August. The law expands the government’s authority to listen in on American communications, [and this is the most troubling part] without a court order.
So, if this law is passed (and it has only been delayed until January), it will give our government the right to eavesdrop on any American citizen, without first getting a warrant to do so from a judge.

Federal Judge Smacks Down on White House Log Secrecy.
Why in the world do White House visitor logs need to be a national secret? Well, when all else fails the Bush administration usually plays the “Threat to National Security†card. No surprise here, that is exactly what they did. However, on Monday, a federal judge rejected the Bush administration argument for secrecy, and ruled that the visitor logs are subject to the Freedom of Information Act and are public information.

War Top Priority For Latino Voters - Not Immigration

Troop pullout may deliver the Latino swing vote, writes La Opinión, the Spanish-language newspaper in Los Angeles. “Editors of La Opinión assert the independence of the Latino electorate, saying they weigh the candidates and their proposals instead of voting blindly for either party.â€
“The war figures highly in Latino voters’ concerns, above immigration. Nearly half (49 percent) prefer an immediate pullout of troops. About the same number (48 percent) know someone personally affected by the Iraq war; in 26 percent of cases the person is a family member,†according to a poll conducted by Hispanic media group ImpreMedia and market research firm Avanze.
In the five states with the highest Latino populations (California, Illinois, New York, Florida, and Texas), thirty-four percent of registered Latino voters do not report a preference for either a Democratic or Republican candidate.

Who is Elaine Brown?
Green Party presidential contender — and advocate of “change that will not be e-mailed, rapped in a CD or YouTubed.”
Her mission: “to humanize this society.”
How?
Brown proposes a program that can be easily supported by the immediate transfer of the billions of dollars spent on war—one trillion dollars last year alone.
“Beyond a call for the immediate, unconditional and complete withdrawal of U.S. troops and war machinery from Iraq and Afghanistan, my platform focuses on the repeal of the ‘three-strikes’ crime laws across the nation,” she says. “In addition, the ‘three-strikes’ crime laws overturned the 100-year-old juvenile justice system, allowing for the inhumane housing of children in adult prisons, in violation of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child.”

Huckabee: Women Should Submit To Their Husbands?

This link came to me by way of Joy at Care2. This is from a post at Crooks and Liars.
Huckabee’s opinion on gay marriage is out there, but we should also be publicizing Huckabee’s opinions on heterosexual marriage. Specifically, what he believes about a women’s role in a marriage.
In August of 1998, Huckabee was one of 131 signatories to a full page USA Today Ad which declared: “I affirm the statement on the family issued by the 1998 Southern Baptist Convention.†What was in the family statement from the SBC? “A wife is to submit herself graciously to the servant leadership of her husband even as the church willingly submits to the headship of Christ.†Read on…
The Huckster is trying his best to hide his full gospel, but somehow I doubt this factoid will attract more women to his campaign. If you needed further proof that this religious extremist will set our country back even further than President Bush has, look no further. Of course, what do we expect from a man who lobbied to have a convicted serial rapist paroled for political gain.
