Would Offshore Drilling Bring Gas Prices Down? — by Catherine Morgan
—
This will be part one in a series of posts I will be doing on gas prices and offshore drilling. I want to take a look at the facts, and attempt to separate the truth from the fiction. Would offshore drilling lower gas prices? Why do the oil companies need more places to drill, if they aren’t even using all of what they have now? How would more offshore drilling effect the environment? Does this have more to do with politics than the people? These are just a few of the many question we will try to answer here.
Let’s start with an article in today’s New York Times. Here are a few excepts from that article, I really recommend you read the full piece.

Why Would Clinton Supporters Vote For McCain? - by Catherine Morgan (cross-posted at BlogHer)
I think all the talk about women supporters of Hillary Clinton, voting for John McCain, is being overblown by the media. Shocking.
Yes, it has been a tough time to be a Hillary supporter. And yes, there are a lot of fresh wounds that will take time to heal. However, I do believe that most women who supported Hillary, did so because of her positions on the issues, and not just because she is a woman. For that reason, I have to believe that after careful consideration of the issues (especially women’s issues), Clinton supporters will see that a vote for McCain, would be a vote against women.
For the record, I admit…I’m still holding out hope for the dream ticket. But, no matter how this all shakes out, come November, I’m voting Democrat.
Here is some of what other bloggers are saying about this issue…
Will Pro-Choice Women Vote For McCain?
Following up on my post from yesterday on John McCain’s bid for Hillary Clinton’s female voters, I see my good friend Arianna Huffington has finally joined the ranks of pro-choice bloggers and writes about a promising poll by Planned Parenthood. The poll concludes that many of McCain’s supporters in swing states are pro-choice, and don’t realize what a reactionary barbarian he is when it comes to a woman’s right to control her own body.
From an Open Letter to Women Supporters of Hillary Clinton
I have family members who have strong ties to Bill and Hillary, one of whom campaigned with them during the primaries. I can’t tell you the love and admiration she has for the Clintons. However, she is going to set aside her personal feelings and work hard to ensure an Obama presidency. She is well-aware of the consequences if he is not elected.
You may choose to follow Hillary’s lead and switch your allegiance to Obama. You may also choose not to vote; or (as some of you have indicated) vote for John McCain The latter two options are one-in-the-same. Since record numbers of Democratic voters are expected to turn out for November’s elections vs. a lesser amount of Republican voters, a non-vote will essentially benefit McCain.
Should you choose to vote for McCain, you would be wise to study up on McCain’s positions regarding issues which are important to most women.
White Women To vote Against Reproductive Rights
Yeah, that’ll show him!
John McCain is in favor of forced pregnancy, but these women would rather vote for him than Obama.
John McCain’s healthcare plan is “let the market handle it” (like it has been handling it so far), but these women would rather vote for him than Obama.
John McCain is obsessed with fighting wars and extending the war of choice on Iraq, but these women would rather vote for him than Obama.
Why? Because they seem to feel that Hillary Clinton is somehow entitled to the nomination, despite the fact that she didn’t get the votes.
A Hidden Well: Obama in 08…
I just ordered an Obama in 08 bumper sticker from moveon.org. Hillary was my candidate of choice, for many reasons, but mainly because she has been a champion for women’s reproductive rights, justice, and health for thirty years. However, the reality is that Barack Obama, not Hillary Clinton, has been chosen as the Democratic presidential nominee. And sure, I experienced some initial disappointment over this. But it is what it is, as my friend Jayne would say. So now I’m ready to step up to the plate in support of Obama and do everything in my power to make sure that he is elected the next president of the United States.

Clinton and Obama Talk…Will There Be A Dream Ticket? — by Catherine Morgan (read full post at The Care2 Election Blog)
Should Barack Obama choose Hillary Clinton to be his running mate? I asked this question at The Care2 Election Blog, you can see comments here and here. What do you think? This will be the topic of today’s political blog roundup.
It seems to me that a “dream ticket†is the only way to bring the party together. I also think, if Obama doesn’t choose Hillary as his VP, there is a very good chance McCain could win in November. And McCain (if he’s smart) could end up choosing a woman as his running mate. If he does that, many women would see it as an historic opportunity for them to vote for the first woman VP.
That’s what I think. Here is what other bloggers are saying…
From Faye Anderson at Anderson@Large…
BlogHer contributing editor, Erin Kotecki Vest (also at Queen of Spain), would like to have been a fly on the wall.
There is news tonight Senators Clinton and Obama sat down and had a chat in Washington D.C.
I have burning questions, and I realize not all of them are about policy or substance.
But…
Was there a hug when they entered the room?
Handshake?
I’m guessing no fist-pound.
Was it cold and formal?
Was small talk exchanged? I’m envisioning something like:
“So, how’s the weather here in DC?”
“Oh, did you see those storms we had?”
“Boy, I sure am tired from all that campaigning.”
“Tell me about it, I haven’t slept in weeks.”
I have no doubt when details are released we will get the standard pr push of “In a productive and friendly sit-down, the two Senators were eager to map out the unification of the Democratic party and to continue their hard work for the American people…” or some such BS.
You have to admit, you want to know just how ‘friendly’ it may or may not have gone.
PunditMom has a post at BlogHer asking the same question, Will She or Won’t She?…
The pundits cannot help themselves. We’ve heard every theory from pundits galore during the course of the campaign. And since the sun came up this morning, cable networks and pundits (myself included!) have been parsing every word, every sign, every move of the candidates and their surrogates about what will happen tonight. Can you say “feeding frenzy?â€

Are you having problems with Technorati? Just when I think something is fixed, something else is wrong. I have several blogs that are all experiencing some sort of trouble, and I have been unable to even claim my personal blog (catherine-morgan.com). The only explanation seems to be in a message that pops-up now and then and says this…
We’re currently experiencing unusually high load and are working to resolve issues with the service as quickly as possible.
What does that even mean? How many weeks will it take to fix this problem? What happened? I’m very frustrated.

Roundup: Will Florida and Michigan Votes Be Counted? — by Catherine Morgan (cross-posted at the Care2 Election Blog)
Over the last few months I’ve made my feelings pretty clear on the issues of disenfranchising Florida and Michigan voters, a Florida recount, and my lack of love for Howard Dean. People who don’t really know the facts, are quick to judge, and claim that Florida and Michigan broke the rules and deserve their punishment. However, a smart Democrat (and I’m not referring to Howard Dean, just in case there is any confusion) would see the bigger picture. And the bigger picture is…Democrats have a slim chance of winning the general election without Florida and Michigan.
Here is some of what other bloggers are saying on this issue. Let me know what you think in comments.

Oil Companies - How Green Are They? — Posted by Catherine Morgan (cross-posted at The Care2 Election Blog)
Are the oil companies going green? If by “green†we are talking about cold hard cash…The oil companies are very, very green. In fact, their cups runneth over with greenness. However, in this case, the oil companies (a.k.a. Big Oil) are spending a lot of money on commercials designed to convince you and me that they are investing in our environmental future. So, how green are they?
So what do you think? Are the oil companies really going green? Or, are they just playing green on tv?
Personally, I think they should be required to spend a certain percentage of their profits on green alternatives to oil…at the very least.
