Face Time with the Kids - Week 2: Cooking Time

facetime with the kids Face Time with the Kids Week 2: Cooking Time

I have found all kitchen-related duties an invaluable asset for fitting in some extra face time with my kids. From meal planning to grocery shopping, cooking to washing dishes, each task provides an opportunity for quality time with one or more of my children.

I always try to include my children in my work. As a part of this household, they are responsible for learning its ins and outs. What better way to achieve this than with hands-on experience? Plus, they really do view the extra mom time as a privilege.

I spend a good portion of every day in the kitchen and all of my children love to help out in any way they can. I like to think I have made the kitchen the true heart of our home and they truly enjoy being in there with me. They would all choose helping me cook over just about anything else. And because this is where I spend so much time, if I really want to make quality time a priority, I need to provide a welcoming environment in my kitchen for the whole family.

Cooking with the kids is a lot of fun, especially when making their favorite meals or a specifically “kid-oriented” recipe. This face-time avenue requires patience, an unhurried attitude and a willingness to accept mistakes. The pride that my children take in helping me in the kitchen, and the joy that they get in spending quality time with me, makes any extra effort exceedingly worthwhile.

Here is a week’s worth of fun dinners to make with the kids.

M - Wagon Wheel Casserole, corn bread T - Chicken toes (recipe below), potato fingers (french fries), heart salad (romaine hearts, celery hearts, hearts of palm, artichoke hearts & dressing) W - Bacon & spinach quiche, breadsticks or rolls Th - Fajita pitas with a buffet of topping choices F - Brown-bag Barcelona chicken (A great all in one dinner!) S - Personal pizzas on either English muffins, pita bread, rolled-out biscuits from a can, or homemade pizza dough. The fun of this one is in adding whatever toppings you want, and getting creative with their placement. Su - Taco bar with homemade tortillas. Homemade tortillas are such a hit in our house, not just for their taste but also for the fun they entail. My kids love being given their own ball of dough to play with, roll out or shape like play-doh. Then I cook their creations in the skillet and they have a nice little treat to snack on while I finish dinner.

Here are a few other fun recipes that I’ve stumbled across that would be great to make with the kids.

Painted toast Cookies & Milk Bars Banana Dogs (I just love this idea and so do my kids!)

*Chicken Toes

1 c. corn flakes cereal, any brand (crushed) 1 c. plain bread crumbs 2 T. brown sugar 1 t. salt 1/2 t. freshly ground black pepper 1/2 t. allspice 3 T. vegetable oil 1/3 c. flour 2 eggs, beaten 1 1/2 lbs. chicken breast tenders, cut into 2-inch pieces

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

2. Combine the crushed corn flakes, bread crumbs, brown sugar, salt, pepper and allspice in a shallow dish or bowl.

3. Evenly pour the vegetable oil over the breading mixture and stir to combine thoroughly.

4. Put the flour in a second bowl and the eggs in a third bowl. Dredge the chicken pieces in the flour, then the eggs, then the breading mixture. Place the chicken pieces on a cookie sheet and bake at 375 for about 15 minutes, until cooked through and browned.

The “Face Time With The Kids” End 08 Great challenge is all about spending some real, quality time with our children. It is so easy to get caught up in all of our day-to-day duties that sometimes spending time with the kids can get pushed aside. So let’s take this opportunity throughout the next month to put our children front and center in our everyday activities. Let’s build some memories and tie some heart strings.

If you do not have children, we encourage you to join in also. Surely there is someone in your life who would greatly benefit from some quality time spent with you. This month, we challenge you to make them a priority.

Won’t you join us this month as we challenge you (and ourselves), to spend some quality face-time with our children? To join, simply write a post on your blog about what you will be doing this upcoming week in an effort to fit in that special quality-time, or let us know what you are already doing. Then leave us a comment or send us an email and we’ll share your efforts in a carnival-style post so that we can all encourage and be inspired by each other.

D.E.A.R. I am still working in the area of reading books to the children and will be starting Drop Everything And Read time this week in the afternoons, instead of TV. I hope I can stick to it.

Hi! I love your blog! Thought you might be interested in this cool book, site and mission for kids…www.bonobokids.com, make sure to check out the blog too…the goal is to connect kids to the environment with bonobo apes - it’s all centered around an awesome children’s book called, I’m Lucy: A Day in the Life of a Young Bonobo (afterword by Jane Goodall!)
Have a great day,
Julie

Yum! Looks like a great menu and a great week - I especially love the chicken toes! Looks tasty! And I always love a quick and easy quiche or frittata . . .

My little guy is only 16 months but he loves being with me and watching me in the kitchen. I made bread the other day and gave him his own little bowl and spoon and he “cooked” with me while I made the dough. When he saw me kneading, he took some of the board flour and put it in his bowl too! I think he’s going to be the next Iron Chef. :)

Best,
Sarah

I love your idea of incorporating kids in your cooking to spend more time with them! I can’t wait to try out some of your recipes. My daughter is still a bit young to really help, but I do let her dump ingredients into bowls and stir, and she loves “helping” mommy! I will have to check out that Rachel Ray cookbook, I am a fan of her recipes.

Have a great week!

Great post! I love having my kiddos in the kitchen. My bigger kids are almost 13 and 10 and they are able to really cook now. It is a great way we hang out together. I get more conversation and insight into their lives when we are messing around in the kitchen (especially with the almost 13 year old boy!). It took more time when they were littler, but I have been rewarded and blessed in ways I can’t even count!
