Grails in Depth slides from JavaOne 08

Although I wasn't able to make JavaOne due to my bought of pneumonia, Guillaume did an excellent job of delivering my presentations and then did everyone a favour by posting them online! Here we go for those who haven't seen them yet:

Hi Graeme,

I've visited the site quite a number of times now, and browsed through the main Grails site, and I hate to say it, but one vital ingredient is missing.

I can see there is a loyal group of followers, but for anyone who is lurking on the edge of the pool, wondering whether to dip their toe in, the site just doesn't tell them exactly what problem Grails is addressing, and how it does it.

It might be that once I had downloaded the application and played with it, that a light may switch on in my brain giving me that Ureka moment, but sadly I don't see enough of a message to compel me to do that.

I guess I'm going to be flamed by the faithful, that is natural, but I offer this advice so that you might lure more passers-by into your shop, rather than leaving them to browse at the window.
cheers

Thanks for the advice Rob, do you have any specific ideas on where we could improve the site? Is it the messages on the front page that don't jump out enough?

I just spent a little time thinking about this and reflecting on why I've been interested in Grails. It seems to me that Grails' intention is to bring the level of productivity apparent in RoR to the Java world. If that is the case, then it might be worth analyzing how the RoR site promotes Rails. In a quick review, I can see that the Rails site puts a primary focus on the end user benefits, "happiness", and secondarily on the technology.

There are some valuable and interesting things that could be said about Grails right up front:

1. Grails makes Java web development productive and fun

2. Grails lets you leverage your investment in existing technology

3. Grails lets you add next generation WWW features link REST and web services easily

4. Grails gives you everything you need to work with best of breed Java libraries

5. Grails gives you everything you need to get started building and deploying webapps: framework, database (HSQL, ...), web server

Nice slides. And I agree with rob and joshua, Grails is a great concept with a great implementation. A little hype could only help.

Hi Graeme,

It's sad to say, but in reality the site doesn't really leap out and say what it's all about. So for instance, if I was selling a washing powder, I might put 'Washing needs EMO. Add one dollup to your machine and it will save you scrubbing off stains'.

Is Grails a Java framework? (btw that was a guess) If so what problem does it solve for me.

You may lose some of your audience, but they were probably the people who wouldn't be interested in it anyway, but you will gain people who can see that it may be a relevant solution for whatever their problem is.
